Leisure Tourism in the Limpopo Province, South Africa

The South African Limpopo Province is distinctive in its ample variety of attractions. Distant mountains frame endless landscapes and the trees and thorny terrain housing unique wildlife form part of one of South Africa's most popular and well-managed conservation areas. Visitors to the Limpopo Province in South Africa can witness a variety of cultures, landscapes and wildlife. This is untamed Africa at its finest - the land of wide open bushveld, big skies and the ever-present thorn tree. From game-viewing in its numerous nature reserves to discovering more about prehistoric human habitation, Limpopo has something for everyone.

Less extreme outdoor activities such as birding, game drives, game walks, fishing, horse-riding, horse safaris, canoeing/kayaking, river cruises and team-building exercises are also offered throughout the province. Popular sports such as golf, tennis, bowls, rugby and swimming are all catered for too, and runners and cyclists will delight in the regular marathons and races held throughout the province.

For the adventurous, the extreme sports on offer will thrill even the most daring of adrenaline seekers. The untouched, almost endless display of nature and prolific wildlife of the Limpopo offer endless opportunities for excitement, adventure, sport and team-building. So buckle up and enjoy the ride as we get your adrenaline pumping and push your limits to the extreme!

'Big Five' Walking Trails in the Limpopo Province, South Africa

Walking safaris are one of the most rewarding ways to discover and experience the secrets of the bush, true wilderness and wildlife. Guided walks in 'Big Five' areas are offered at selected lodges throughout Limpopo. Guests are briefed prior to their excursions into the wild, the rangers providing informal tuition regarding the procedures to be followed on the walks. The guides are extremely well informed, readily sharing their wealth of knowledge about 'bush culture' with guests - from the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects and birds to the medicinal uses of plants, local folklore, basic tracking and survival skills. Because in the bush, nothing is predictable. The number of guests on a walk is usually limited, with the guides taking into account the fitness levels of the particular group. One or more armed 'trails guides' accompany the group, who can then experience the African bush in safety.

In the summer months, departures are usually prior to breakfast and again in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. In winter a sumptuous breakfast is the normal prelude to a morning safari.

The Kruger National Park offers selected walking safaris, including a Rhino Walking Safari, each one offering a potentially new experience. For more information on 'walks in the park', visit krugerpark.safari.co.za.

Birding in the Limpopo Province, South Africa

If wild birds are your passion, flock to Limpopo - the bird-watcher's haven! The Limpopo Valley has a great diversity of bird species. It is an area of crossover covering the most southerly latitude for the northern species and is also the most northerly latitude for many of the southern species. In addition it is an area of crossover for the desert birds of the west and tropical birds of the east. Many of the migrations pass over this area and vagrants are frequently spotted.

In excess of 400 species have been identified in the Mapungubwe area of the Limpopo Valley. This area is included in The Zoutpansberg Limpopo Birding Route, being developed in conjunction with Birdlife SA. Visit www.limpopobirding.com for more detailed information on birder-friendly accommodation, wilderness trails, guiding, birding sites, maps, birding checklists, descriptions of bird habitats, trip reports and suggested itineraries. The Nylsvley Nature Reserve also offers excellent birding, the most rewarding season being winter.

Game Drives in the Limpopo Province, South Africa

Game drives are usually undertaken in 4x4 vehicles and can be either self-drive or guided. It stands to reason that guests have more to learn from a guided game drive and this also the safer alternative given the unpredictability of wild animals. Night drives can be particularly rewarding in terms of game-viewing as many animals are most active then.

Horse Safaris in the Limpopo Province, South Africa

A horseback safari offers an excellent opportunity to explore Limpopo. The Soutpansberg enables riders to discover this magnificent mountain on horseback, the Waterberg to experience game-viewing in the same manner. Riders enjoy panoramic views across miles and miles of Africa. It is a truly exhilarating experience to ride through the African bush as the pioneers did. In a vehicle, you are remote from the excitement around you; on horseback your senses come alive. The combination of riding and game-viewing makes for a unique and unforgettable experience.

Overnight trails and trails of up to eight days are on offer in the Lapalala Wilderness Area, as are day- to three-day trails in the Atherstone and Mabalingwe Nature Reserves. Horseback game-viewing is offered at Mabula Game Reserve in the Waterberg, where novices are welcome except on Big Game trails.

Riding in the African bush is an ever-changing and stimulating experience: from quiet walking through thick bush on the lookout for birds and game, to long trots and canters. Nothing in the bush is predictable and the sense of anticipation of what you might see heightens all your senses. Come alive on a horse safari and experience Limpopo from a slightly different perspective.

Hot-Air Ballooning in the Limpopo Province, South Africa

Experience the wonder of a lighter-than-air flight over the Lowveld game areas adjoining the Kruger National Park and experience ballooning at its best. Flights take place over Kapama Game Reserve and other lodges and reserves with suitable terrain, and the experienced pilots and guides ensure a safe, enjoyable and informative adventure over 'Big Five' country.

Ballooners can look forward to hot coffee served before sunrise as the eight-storey-high balloon is inflated and prepared for flight; a bird's-eye view of the African wilderness; sparkling wine and fruit juice after the flight (weather-permitting) and breakfast after the flight on a deck overlooking the Blyde River if in the vicinity of Otter's Den. A fantastic way to see scenery and game, a hotair balloon safari is bound to be the highlight of your visit to Limpopo.
