Usually a quiet campsite close to Swellendam will once again be transformed into a slightly surreal spot of revelry, raging rock and soulful tunes and performances from another planet and shenanigans of the type that you can only pull off when you’re safely tucked in next to the mighty Breede River for four days – Yup four days. This is an event of epic proportions the result is: One River, Three Stages, Four Days, Loads of Music and Comedy and festival goers that have a passion for some of South Africa’s best music get ready for Up the Creek 2012!

Up The Creek, Music Festival, Swellandam

What You Get @ Up The Creek

In typical Up The Creek tradition there will once again be the main stage as well as the all-night bar stage through out the four days. At the Up the Creek campsite it is uniquely situated on the banks of the Breede River.  You can frolic in the river during the day and then move up to main stage as the day progresses. Only one stage will be running at a time, so you won’t miss any of the acts on offer.

In 2012 there will be more on offer than before as well as the usual:
Food vendors offering delicious festival faire,
Coffee maestros,
The festival ground is also kitted out with a medical tent with trained personnel, while lifeguards at the riverside will keep tans in check and of course their eyes wide open.

Float Your Boat…..

Put your creativity to the test & we’ll be giving away some awesome prizes for a variety of creative floats in 2012, Lobster lilos, Indian canoes, floating bars and human tube chains are making a comeback in 2012. Following the splashing, singing, howling success of last year’s float competition, the benchmark has been set. The competition will be sponsored by Bos Iced Tea with an absolutely to- die- for winners package prize.

Participants are encouraged to think outside of their beach gear boxes in order to stand a chance to win these incredible prizes.  At this stage, categories include anything from the best design and most floatable contraption to the most luxurious device on the Breede River.

What U Need @ Up The Creek

Bring:
Your ticket,
ID Book,

Newlands Brewery – Sipping on History

Newlands Brewery

Newlands Brewery

Some of the well known tourist attractions in Cape Town including Table Mountain, Lions Head, V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay and the Winelands are well known.  But little do some of the tourists know that there are a few hidden gems in Cape Town to escape the crowds and save on your holiday budget.

Sipping on History

Sipping on History

Beat the New Years Blues and visit the Newlands Brewery which has been nestled on the banks of the Liesbeek River for nearly 200 Years.  The Newlands Brewery is the second largest brewery by volume in the world, and one of a handful still in a residential area. Pumping out nearly 1,5 million beers a day to satisfy the thirst of the South African population, this is well worth a visit to see and experience where beer is made and comes from.

The story of beer began on the banks of the Liesbeek River in 1958.  Letterstedt built the original mariendahl brewery in Newlands, that still stands today, the warehouse is relatively small but can move 90 trucks in a day.  The brewery sends the beer to depots located in Belville, Ottery and to 40 countries world wide.

South African Breweries: SAB

South African Breweries: SAB

At the Brewery there is a tour that lasts an hour-long of its rich history.  Visitors can truly experience and appreciate the fruits of its Labour and at the end.  The tour concludes in the Jacob Lettersedt Pub, where freshly brewed beer is served icy-cold, and guests can enjoy two free drinks on the house.

The Newlands Brewrey Tour is well worth a visit and at R30 per person is a must on a post-holiday budget. The Tour runs three times a day at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00 as well as on Saturdays at 10:00. Booking is essential, for more information or to make a booking, call (021) 658 7511

uShaka Marine World, Durban South Africa

uShaka Marine World

uShaka Marine World in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa)

Situated in Durban South Africa, the world class uShaka Marine World opened its turnstiles to the general public on April 30th 2004. Close to three years in the making, uShaka is a key attraction in the Durban’s Golden Mile and has fast positioned itself in the hub of activity, offering a world of entertainment, excitement, fun and uniqueness.

uShaka is a safe, secure and clean environment that resonates the sound of fun, laughter and the spirit of togetherness.  The amazing uShaka Marine World Entertainment Park has bought together many different cultures, like no other place in Africa and abroad. Entertainment is non-stop, extending from the day-time operations of Sea World, Wet ‘n Wild, and uShaka Beach, to the night time festivities of the Village Walk.

The wonders of the Sea

The wonders of the Sea at the uShaka Marine World

uShaka Marine World has many exciting exhibits for all ages and is a world of wonder:
From Fear to Fascination with Dangerous Creatures!

The biggest and baddest!

Come face to face with some of the world’s fastest and most poisonous snakes such as the king cobra and black mamba. Then there’s the anaconda, the longest and heaviest snake in the world, and the Gaboon adder with the longest, most venomous fangs.  The adventure happens in a “Zanzibar” warehouse filled with exotic reptiles from around the world which have been saved from a shipwreck.

The scorpion’s secret code…….

Did you know that all scorpions have the ability to glow in the dark? Yes that’s right! It’s like their secret code whereby they can see each other but no one else can see them! Sometimes they glow more brightly than other times, and this is all linked to whether they have moulted or not. If they have moulted then they glow brighter…….

This ability to glow in the dark is just one of the amazing features that they have, so come on in and see for yourself at our Dangerous Creatures exhibition.

Spiders, Frogs, Lizards, Snakes…

The “creeps” continue with dart frogs, tarantulas, Gila monster lizards, which never let go once they bite down, false water cobra (of which there is only one in the country), goliath bull frogs, tree vipers and Taipan snakes.

The Argentinean equivalent of the Nile leguaan – a Tegu – is also on display, the only one of its kind in the country.

Want to take a walk on the wet side? The innovative Ocean Walker allows you to walk slowly, rather like an astronaut, on the floor of the Open Ocean exhibit. Here you can gaze at the huge fish, rays and sand sharks as they mill slowly around you, completely unperturbed by your presence.

Snorkel Lagoon

Snorkel Lagoon Get up close and personal with some of the most exciting creatures found off the KZN coastline, as you explore the nooks and crannies of the Snorkel Lagoon. Float above the splendour of colour beneath you, as corals shine and fish gleam and leave feeling exhilarated.
