Dining at Fugitives Drift Lodge

Guests are invited to enjoy delicious cuisine at this country retreat in KwaZulu-Natal where a fusion of home and modern flavours await.  Meals are served in the welcoming atmosphere of a museum of Zulu War memorabilia.

Swimming

The Hotel has a lovely outdoor swimming pool set in the heart of the magnificent gardens from where scenic views of the surroundings can be enjoyed. Sun loungers are invited for relaxation in the tranquility of nature.

Horseback riding

The six horses are settled on the Lodge, take guests through the game reserve which is home to giraffes, zebras and wildebeest to name but a few. Horseback rides lead riders through this magnificent game reserve from where breathtaking views of this property and its flora and fauna can be admired.

Mountain biking

Exciting mountain bike trails are located in the Game Reserve with bikes being available for hire.

Walking / hiking

Wonderful walks and hikes may be enjoyed in this scenically beautiful region of South Africa.

Fishing

A walk to Fugitives’ Drift set on the Buffalo River provides an opportunity not only to swim in rapids and pools but also to fish.  The 22 km river frontage offers great fishing.

Isandlwana Tour - battlefields
  • Breakfast is served at 06:50
  • Tour departs from the Lodge/Guest House at 7:30
  • Returns for lunch at approximately 13:00.
  • Tour includes transport, entrance fees and refreshments.
Rorke's Drift Tour - battlefields
  • Tour departs from the Lodge/Guest house at 15:15pm in summer and at 15:00pm in winter
  • Returns in time to have evening drinks around the fire before dinner
  • Dinner is served at around 20:00
  • Tour includes transport, entrance fees and refreshments.
Fugitives' Drift Tour - battlefields

A walk to see the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives in an attempt to save the Queen’s Colour, and where the first two posthumous Victoria Crosses were won.  There is no charge for this tour.

Corporate Meetings

The Harford Library at the Fugitives Drift Lodge is a suitable venue for corporate groups who wish to meet and discuss business.  This welcoming library can seat up to 34 guests and offers a dedicated kitchen, wireless internet access as well as an integrated audio/visual system making any formal event a success.  The Harford Library can host formal lunches and parties, corporate meetings and entertainment.

Malaria Status and Animals
  • The Fugitives’ Drift Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is malaria free featuring a beautiful geography.  The 5,000 acre Fugitives’ Drift Game Reserve is a registered Natural Heritage Site which is home to a great abundance of wildlife.  It is home to over 250 species of bird species including the Purple-crested Lourie as well as the Yellow Weaver.

    Game which can be encountred here include giraffe, zebra, kudu, nyala, impala, blesbok, wildebeest,waterbuck, hartebeest, duiker, mountain reed buck, bushbuck, jackal, karakul, porcupines and monkeys.

  • Battlefields Kids Tours

    Fugitives’ Drift in South Africa is famous for its interesting battlefield tours which bring the battles of Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana back to life. This battlefield tour experience provides travellers with a deep insight into some of the most moving battlefields of the country.  The Fugitives’ Drift Lodge also provides dedicated tours for children under 12 years of age.

    While the retreat's world-renowned tours are provided to adults, shorter and more interactive tours which are led by a guide engage and inspire children with stories of the bravery and courage of the British soldiers and Zulu warriors.

    These tours are followed by a game walk and a more cultural encounter
    :

    • see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, Nyala and other non – threatening game in the 5000-acre private reserve
    • hold a Martini-Henry rifle, as used by the British at Rorke’s Drift and a variety of contemporary Zulu assegais
    • discover the traditional medicinal uses of the flora and fauna of the region.
    • a visit to the nearby Zulu cultural village.

Directions

Directions from Johannesburg to Fugitives Drift Lodge and Guest House (5 hours):

Take the N3 highway south towards Durban for about 1 hour.
Cross the Vaal River and just before the Wilge Toll Plaza, turn off the N3 onto the R103 and head towards WARDEN.
After about 60km, turn left onto the R34 towards VREDE.
After about 15km, just before the town of Vrede, turn right on the R34 towards MEMEL and NEWCASTLE. (Be very careful of potholes for 16km between Memel and the top of Bothas pass on the R34).
Go through Newcastle and turn right onto the LADYSMITH road (N11).
After 16km take the R621 to Dannhauser, Hattingspruit and Dundee.
In Dundee, at the 5th traffic light (in the main street) turn right on the R33 towards Greytown.
The signboard is on the left of the road. Then after 14km turn left onto dirt to RORKES DRIFT, drive for 29km to Rorkes Drift. Go beyond Rorkes Drift for 3km and turn left onto the D31 signed Fugitives Drift.
Go along this road for 7km through the big black gate until you see signs for the Lodge and Guest House, on the right. (Please note that the gate is locked at 6pm).


Directions from Durban to Fugitives Drift Lodge and Guest House (4 hours):

Take the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg and take the Greytown/Church Street glide-off and follow the R33 to Greytown for 70km.
In Greytown follow signs to Dundee.
Continue along the R33 through Keates Drift, Tugela Ferry and Pomeroy.
Please be aware of speed humps and potholes.
10km after Pomeroy take the dirt road turnoff to the right, marked Elandskraal (and Isibindi and Camp Buffalo signage).
At Elandskraal (which consists of a church and a trading store) turn left to Rorkes Drift.
Go for about 14km and before you get to Rorkes Drift turn right onto the D31, sign posted Fugitives Drift. Go for about 7km (through the big black gates) and follow the signs for the Guest House or the Lodge. (Please note that the gate is locked at 6pm).

Alternative route from Durban is via Mooi River, Colenso, Ladysmith and Dundee. In Dundee take the R33 towards Greytown and follow the directions as from Johannesburg above.
