Introducing Hluhluwe Game Reserve

The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is one of the largest game parks in South Africa. It is situated 280km north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.  Hluhluwe is named after the thorny monkey rope, “Hluhluwe” in Zulu, which grows on the banks of the Hluhluwe River and Umfolozi is named after the Black and White Mfolozi River. It is an unspoilt wilderness of rolling hills, subtropical forest, acacia, woodland and palm-fringed rivers.  The park is world-renowned for its rhino conservation.

In 1895 two wildlife reserves, Hluhluwe and Umfolozi were established to protect the last rhinos in South Africa.  They are not adjoined to one another, but a linking Corridor Reserve (established in 1989) between them allows animals to move freely from one park to the other. The three reserves, now combined into one park, have a total area of 96,000 hectares and now is the fourth largest in the South Africa. The land is quite hilly except on the river flats.  The varied vegetation supports a healthy population of all the Big Five, large herds of Nyala, impala, wildebeest, kudu, zebra, as well as giraffe, wild dog, hyena and cheetah, birds and reptiles.

Over 200km of roads provide visitors to explore this magnificent game reserve and view game from the comfort of their vehicle. There are also viewing and picnic sites where it is safe to leave your car. There are several hiking trails, ranging from 30mins to a five day one. Game drives are available and a boat trip on the Hluhluwe Dam. Accommodation is available in two camps.
