Introducing Hartebeespoort

The small resort town of Hartbeespoort is located in the North West Province of South Africa.  Hartbeespoort nestles on the slopes of the Magaliesberg mountain and the banks of the Hartbeespoort Dam. The name of Hartbeespoort can be translated as 'pass of the hartbees' which is a species of antelope in the Afrikaans language.

Hartbeespoort was previously known as Schoemansville, named after General Hendrik Schoeman, a Boer General in the Anglo-Boer War, who owned the farm that the Hartbeespoort Dam.  Hartbeespoort forms  part of the Madibeng Local Municipality which also includes the nearby town of Brits.

Hartbeespoort is home to many holiday homes which dot the shores of the Hartbeespoort dam.  The 'Om Die Dam' / 'Around the dam' marathon of 50 km takes place here annually in the first half of the year.
