Introducing Alberton

The historic East Rand town of Alberton lies on the banks of the Natal Spruit and is a 25-minute drive from O.R. Tambo International Airport and only 15 kilometres from Johannesburg city centre. Alberton is a bustling commercial and industrial hub, home to South Africa's largest brewery.

The town's suburbs provide a tranquil alternative to the busier city life of central Johannesburg. Forming part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan, Alberton has no shortage of activities and attractions. Visitors can explore late Iron Age settlements at Meyersdal Koppie Nature Reserve, tackle a single-track mountain biking trail on Rietvlei Zoo Farm or tee off at the challenging Reading Country Club golf course.

Alberton has its roots in a small general store opened by Johannes Petrus Meyer on Elandsfontein farm in 1870. Thirty-four years later, General Hennie Alberts purchased a portion of this farm, subdivided his land and established the town Alberton. By 1918 its small population had blossomed and the first town hall and factory were erected. During the Apartheid era, racial segregation saw the development of townships on the fringes of Alberton.

The township of Thokoza was a site of heightened political conflict and bloodshed during the struggle years and a Memorial Wall has been erected to honour the community members who lost their lives here.
