Introducing Capricorn Region
Polokwane / Pietersburg, Limpopo Province
Polokwane / Pietersburg is the capital of the Limpopo province in South Africa. Polokwane / Pietersburg is a major urban centre, the biggest and most important north of Gauteng ( Johannesburg and Pretoria). The city of Polokwane / Pietersburg in South Africa's Limpopo Province provides access to various nature and wildlife viewing opportunities for ecotourists.
The Polokwane Bird and Reptile Park is home to over 280 species of birds. At the Polokwane Game Reserve South African species of wildlife, birdlife, and plants can be observed in an unspoiled bushveld environment. The Moletzie Bird Sanctuary protects rare birds like the Cape Vulture.
The Modjardji Rainforest which is located in close proximity to Polokwane / Pietersburg holds the largest concentration of indigenous cycads in the world.
Mokopane / Potgietersrus, Limpopo Province (South Africa)
Mokopane / Potgietersrus, which is set in the Limpopo province of South Africa, was established by the Voortrekkers and named Potgietersrus after the Voortrekker leader Piet Potgieter. As Mokopane / Potgietersrus is located only two hours north of Gauteng, the town acts as a getaway destination and as a stop-over for travelers on the way to Botswana, Zimbabwe and to the Kruger National Park. The Mokopane region is one of South Africa's richest agricultural areas where wheat, tobacco, cotton, beef, maize, peanuts and citrus are produced.
The Zebediela Citrus Estate is one of the largest citrus farms in the southern hemisphere. This particular region is rich in minerals with the mining of platinum, diamonds and granite as main mineral resources.
Mookgopong / Naboomspruit, Limpopo Province (South Africa)
Mookgophong / Naboomspruit was established in 1910 after tin was discovered in this area followed by platinum. Naboomspruit is named after the profusion of euphorbia trees (naboom) which grow on the banks of a nearby stream (spruit).
