Malaria Status and Animals
  • Western Cape's De Hoop Nature Reserve is one of the best places from where to admire the Southern Right whales which come to its shores between the months of August to November every year. 

    Endangered or rare animal species which are home in this reserve are the 'Marine Big 5' as well as the Bontebok and Cape Mountain Zebra.  Other animals guests may encounter here include the Eland, the Cape clawless otter, baboons, rock dassies and the occasional rooikat (caracal) and Cape leopard.

    Situated in a malaria free region of South Africa, this nature reserve is ideal for families travelling with children.  The De Hoop Nature Reserve is known for its vibrant and colourful bird population, many of which - such as the endangered African Black Oystercatcher - breed within the reserve. Flora and fauna are impressive too – the fynbos floral kingdom dominates with 1500 species of plants in reserve alone – also 86 species of mammal, 260 or more different birds, 14 amphibian and 50 reptile species.

The glass doors of the rooms face the ocean side, making for great beach and ocean views. The warm and natural decor of the rooms is inspired by the surrounding dunes and fynbos. Directions

Access to De Hoop Nature Reserve by Air:

Travellers can get to the and from the De Hoop Nature Reserve by private charter flight.
The duration of the flight from Cape Town International Airport to De Hoop Nature Reserve is about 40 minutes.
On arrival at the De Hoop airstrip, the team of Morukuru waits to take guests through to their private villa.
Helicopter transfers can also be arranged should this be a requirement, the house features a helicopter platform nearby.


Access to Morukuru Ocean House by Road:

The Reserve gates open at 7am and close at 6pm.
Gate closes at 7pm on Fridays.
Late or early arrivals need to be prebooked and arranged with management.
2WD / wheel drive with higher ground clearance is recommended for the roads inside De Hoop Nature Reserve.


Directions from Cape Town:

For guests who are self driving, take the N2 to Caledon.
Between Botrivier and Caledon you can stop at Dassiesfontein for refreshments.
From Caledon drive through Napier to Bredasdorp.
Please make sure you stop for fuel in Bredasdorp, as there is no petrol station at De Hoop.
From Bredasdorp take the R319 to Swellendam.
At about 6kms turn right, sign posted De Hoop / Malagas / Infanta.
Gravel road for 35kms until you see a sign to the right - De Hoop Nature Reserve.


Directions from George / Swellendam:

From George / Swellendam, drive on the N2 towards Cape Town.
Please make sure you stop for fuel in Swellendam, as there is no petrol station at De Hoop.
13km west of Swellendam, in the direction of Cape Town, turn left onto a gravel road, signed Spitskop.
Continue on this road for about 45km until you reach a T-junction.
Turn left at the T-junction signed Malgas / Infanta and travel approximately 2km before you turn right onto the De Hoop Pad signed BUCHU BUSHCAMP / DE HOOP.
It is 7km from this turn off to the Main Gate of the Park.


Directions from the De Hoop entrance gate to the Morukuru Ocean House:

All the roads in the reserve are gravel except for a short tarred section atthe entrance, and a short section close to Koppie Alleen.
A 2WD /wheel drive with higher ground clearance is recommended for the roads inside De Hoop Nature Reserve.
At the entrance gate you will receive directions to Ocean House.
Follow the signs to Koppie Alleen.
Just before the parking at Koppie Alleen you turn left into a privateroad which leads you to Ocean House.
The driving time is approximately 40 minutes.
