Introducing Kgalagadi Region

The Kgalagadi region is located in southwest Botswana.  It shares country borders with Namibia and South Africa.
The administrative center of Kgalagadi is Tshabong. Kgalagadi covers a vast area of the Kalahari Desert.
Kgalagadi in Botswana streches over a total area of 105,200 km² and has an approximate population of only 42,000.
More than one-third of the Kgalagadi region is covered by the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park which extends all the way into South Africa.

Kgalagadi's location causes it to border the following regions and provinces:

  • Omaheke Region, Namibia: northwest
  • Hardap Region, Namibia: southwest
  • Northern Cape Province, South Africa: south
  • North West Province, South Africa: southeast

Domestically, Kgalagadi borders the following districts of Botswana:

  • Ghanzi District: north
  • Kweneng District: northeast
  • Southern District: east

Sub-districts of the Kgalagadi District in Botswana include:

  • Kgalagadi North
  • Kgalagadi South

Ghanzi is often referred to as the 'capital' of the Kalahari .  Being one of Botswana's most intriguing towns, Ghazi is situated in the middle of nowhere and is separated from other towns by hundreds of kilometres of road. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is larger than Denmark or Switzerland, and bigger than Lesotho and Swaziland combined.  The 52,800 square kilometre Central Kalahari Game Reserve was established in 1961 and is the second largest game reserve in the world. Deception Valley stretches across 80 kilometers of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve's north.
The Deception Valley in Botswana is covered with short grass and dotted with the occasional island of bushy trees.

Some of the roots of the larger trees extend as far as 50 meters below the surface to the water table, enabling them to survive the dry winters. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in Botswana is Africa's first formally declared trans-border conservation area.  This Transfrontier Park (KTP) is located on the border of South Africa and Botswana and was officially launched on May 12, 2000 by South African President Thabo Mbeki and Botswana President Festus Mogae.
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park nestles in the Kgalagadi District of Botswana which is approximately 865 kilometers southwest of Gaborone.  The combined land area of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in Botswana is about 38,000 km2 of which 28,400 km2 lies in Botswana and 9,600 km2 in South Africa.

The Khutse Game Reserve in Botswana, Southern Africa, measures about 2,500 square kilometre, it was opened in 1971 on Bakwena tribal land. The Kuru Museum and Cultural Centre can be found in the village of D'Kar in the Ghanzi district.  The Kuru Museum and Cultural Centre is a place where local villagers and other Basarwa from neighbouring settlements come together to share and strengthen their traditions and culture. In the small museum there is a beautiful permanent exhibition on Basarwa culture, which both locals and visitors greatly enjoy.
