More than three centuries ago about 200 French Huguenots, having escaped religious persecution, settled in the Berg River Valley and founded the community of Franschhoek in the South African Cape Winelands.
The first farm in the valley, Keerweder, was allotted to Heinrich Müller in 1692. Today this farm is the largest in the valley and retains its original name.
The Huguenots that settled in the Cape were originally allotted farms farther down the valley but they were unhappy with the soil conditions in these areas.
The area, above the Berg River and towards the end of the valley, where the soils were more fertile, was originally known as Oliphantshoek (elephants corner), as elephants found it the ideal place to raise their young. It was here, in 1694, that the first nine farms were allotted by Simon van der Stel, then Governor of the Cape.
All of these farms are still in existence, although many have been sub-divided to a much-reduced size. Even today, many of the village’s inhabitants are direct descendants of the original settlers, as reflected in their surnames (family names).
The area became known as “de France hoek” (French corner), due to its inhabitants being mainly French speaking. They were, however, forced to adopt the language of the Dutch settlers but did so willingly, as the French language represented what they were fleeing from. It is reported that within one generation, Dutch was widely spoken.
Today, despite many farms etc. still having French names, there is little French influence in the Franschhoek valley. One notable exception is the Bastille Festival, which is celebrated in July every year. Of course, the biggest legacy that was left by the early settlers was the wine; something for which we are all still grateful.
With its fine balmy summers and the majority of its rainfall in winter, the French Huguenots recognised the potential of the region for wine production and fruit growing.
Wine and Other Routes
The French established vast wine estates throughout the valley. Today you will not only find many of these estates but also numerous small family vineyards. Sixteen of these vineyards form part of the Vignerons de Franschhoek which was formed to promote the valley and its wines. The wine route is open for tastings and cellar tours and is within half an hour's drive from Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington and Somerset West wine routes. Franschhoek also forms part of the scenic Four Passes Fruit Route.
Attractions and Other Places of Interest
At the foot of the pass you will find the Huguenot Memorial and Museum which commemorate the arrival of the Huguenots in 1688. The museum serves as an information and research centre on the Huguenots and their descendants. The Jan Joubert's Gat bridge is one of the oldest bridges in South Africa still in use and is in the Franschhoek pass. The Dutch Reformed Church is a National Monument and is open to the public on request.
Arts and Crafts
Not only did the French bring their viticulture, they also left behind a rich heritage of arts, architecture and hospitality, all of which survives to this day. The main street in Franschhoek, South Africa, is lined with galleries displaying local arts, craft shops and antique shops.
Walks and Trails in and around Franschhoek, Cape Winelands
Being almost surrounded by mountains there are some breathtaking scenic hikes in the nature reserve, Mont Rochelle. Permits are available from the municipality, museum and the information office. The Boland Hiking Trail is a two or three day hike and permits are obtainable from Jonkershoek.
Sporting Facilities
Sporting facilities include a variety of ball sports, notebly petanque, tennis, rugby, squash and cricket. Horse riding, mountain biking and swimming are also available.

Giving Back
L’ermitage in Franschhoek supports the social responsibility charter of the greater Fransche Hoek Estate, which has as its principle goal the creation of entrepreneurial and training opportunities for previously disadvantaged communities in the area.
The Franschhoek Empowerment and Conservation (FREMCO) Trust is the vehicle through which the previously disadvantaged of Franschhoek can participate in the mainstream of the local economy, and which disburses levy funds on behalf of the Stellenbosch Municipality.
The beneficiaries of the Trust are all those who were legally resident in the municipal area of Franschhoek on 30 November 2000, who are breadwinners of a family and who either are members of FRALCRA (i.e., a land claimant), and/or who belong to the previously disadvantaged communities of Franschhoek.
The development of L’ermitage was approved under very specific and strict environmental conditions, supporting our commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability.
Natural Environment
Just some of the initiatives the hotel has undertaken in the run-up to construction have been the redesign of watercourses, the removal of alien black wattles, and a massive “search and rescue” operation to ensure that no plant species were harmed during construction.
A highlight was the unexpected discovery of the rare and endangered serruria gracilis protea on the mountain slopes, resulting in a rethink of the layout of a planned vineyard on the estate.
The Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning follows urban developments closely, and all construction work on site must be carried out according to an approved environmental management plan.
The estate is managed according to an environmental management system known as ISO 14001, an internationally approved standard. In line with this standard, L’ermitage will be audited by an independent ISO 14001 certified auditor body such as the SABS.
