Kruger National Park Walking Safari

1 Day

To walk amongst South Africa's untamed wildlife is to follow tracks, feel the tingle of your own senses, and hear the beating of your heart as you edge closer to a herd of elephant, feeding in the river. Sleeping in a tent, under the Jackelberry trees of Tusker Camp, with only the canvas of your tent between you and the bush - it is an unforgettable experience.

Kruger National Park Walking Safari Overview

Walking safaris in the exclusive 'Big Five' greater Kruger National Park. There is a world of difference between experiencing a safari in Africa on foot, "old style", then from the tinted windows of a luxury bus.

To walk is to be on even ground with African wildlife of Kruger National Park, sharing their paths and waterholes, the daily dramas of their lives, sharing their space.

To walk is to follow tracks, feel the tingle of your senses, and hear the beating of your heart as you edge closer to a herd of elephant, feeding in the river. Sleeping in a tent, under the Jackalberry trees of Tusker Camp, with only the canvas of your tent between you and the bush - it is an unforgettable experience.

The Transfrontier Walking Safaris are offered in the Greater Kruger National Park, transfers can be arranged on the shuttle between OR Tambo Johannesburg International Airport and area hotels (Johannesburg) and Hoedspruit, Limpopo. Your safari starts on arrival at a lovely base camp on the edge of the Greater Kruger from where open 4x4 Land Rovers transport you to our exclusive, unfenced tented camp where you will stay during your walking safari.

There are no fences between the Kruger National Park and its neighbouring private reserves. This area is called Greater Kruger National Park. The advantage of travelling through exclusive wilderness areas of the Greater Kruger is their privacy. Tusker Camp accommodation is unique to Transfrontier' guests.

The walking safari trails appeal to an adventurous mind, keen on a travel - learning experience. Every walk is a book on its own, with an emphasis on the wonders of nature, big and small. Due to the safety precautions for all trialists, the minimum age guest allowed on the trail is 16. Although there is no maximum age, our walks can last up to 6 hours, and tracking might lead the path through thick bush, riverbeds, and gullies. Therefore an average fitness level is required, especially in the hotter summer months (Nov - March). Each trails guide and backup guide walk with a maximum of eight guests.

The combination of walks and drives in the open safari drive vehicle are dependent upon weather and animal movement. Taking such factors into consideration, we always make sure to remember that our primary focus is to walk. All activities start from camp in the early mornings, late afternoons, and at night.

Each safari is necessary and designed to experience the bush the way one should: on foot. After the first walk, you’ll realise you’ve gone back in time – one with your ancestors who roamed these African trails. Although you must always remember: We are working in vast wilderness areas, interacting with nature. A walking safari is where you will learn about the often-overlooked gems throughout the bush, as much as it is about experiencing the "big five within their territory. It is about undergoing the process of tracking, reading the signs of the game from spoor, scat and markings to symbiotic relationships and species behaviour. Although there are no guarantees on sightings, we do guarantee a real bush experience!
