Dining at the Birkenhead House

At this Hotel, the high-class cuisine is a matter of course. In real fusion fashion, the food here is a fine mixture of modern African Cuisine occupied by traditional French techniques. On offer are homemade bread, ice creams, and sorbets, as well as tempura strawberries (seasonal) and fresh local fishes ranging from Marlin, Red Roman & Kabeljou to crayfish and mussels. Soups are a treat and guests may enjoy flavours ranging from vanilla butternut to roasted red pepper tomato.

Guests can choose from a number of different areas in the Hotel as to where they would like to enjoy their meals. These are:

  • On the patio overlooking the ocean
  • In the courtyard next to the pool
  • In the glass-fronted dining area
  • In-room dining where guests can indulge in a sumptuous meal within in the privacy of the suite

Spa Facilities

Lavender Room: The elegantly appointed with a fully equipped bathroom to enhance the spa experience. The delightful aroma of Lavender, gentle background music and the therapeutic sound of the water feature combine to restore balance and soothe the senses.

Cinnamon Room: Known for its warming qualities, which is why the hotel has named the second spa treatment room after this great spice. The room is a beautifully decorated, with unwinding ambient music and a pleasant smell of the cinnamon that promotes rest of the mind.


 

Activities, Sports & Leisure

Whale watching

May through to December, the Southern Right can be spotted along the Walker Bay with its massive presence. August is the peak season of the birthing period.

Nearby beaches

Some of the nearby beaches are as follows:

  • Left to the Hotel is Voëlklip Beach, (Afrikaans, meaning ‘bird rock’) which is perfect for sunbathing.
  • The right to the Hotel is Nanny’s or Kamma Bay. Here guests can request a picnic basket from the Hotel and pack some beach bats and balls for fun filled day.
  • Grotto beach is only a 10 min way away from the Hotel and is the longest strip of white sand in Hermanus, which has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Status. Guests can here, soak up the sun and take a dip in the Ocean.
     
Walks

Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers stunning birds-eye views of Walker Bay for those with high energy levels. Over 1104 different plant species have been collected and identified within the reserve, an area of only 13 square kilometres. A 8 km walk from the Hotel into the centre of town is a perfect opportunity take in all the scenery.
