Seven beautifully appointed stone-and-thatch suites nestled within indigenous forest surroundings
Perched along a dramatic cliffside overlooking the breathtaking Bushman’s River valley, Woodbury Lodge offers an unforgettable safari retreat in the heart of the Eastern Cape bushveld.
As the original property within the Woodbury Collection, Woodbury Lodge opened its doors in 1999 as one of the first safari lodges established on the renowned Amakhala Game Reserve.
Initially imagined as a riverside tented camp along the Bushman’s River, the spectacular panoramic views from the elevated ridgeline proved impossible to resist. The decision was ultimately made to position the lodge among the rocky slopes and dense thicket vegetation high above the river basin, creating the remarkable setting guests enjoy today.
With the dedication of local farm staff and the hands-on involvement of Richard and Giles Gush, the first phase of the lodge included three traditional thatched suites alongside a welcoming kitchen and dining area. Later that same year, an important milestone in the reserve’s history took place when the Amakhala constitution was officially signed on the viewing deck of Woodbury Lodge on 29 October 1999.
Accommodation
Today, Woodbury Lodge welcomes guests to seven elegant stone-and-thatch suites, each thoughtfully designed for comfort and relaxation. Every suite features en-suite bathrooms with heated flooring, air conditioning, and private decks overlooking the sweeping Woodbury plains and surrounding wilderness.
For families, two spacious lodges with interleading rooms comfortably accommodate up to four guests each. Stone pathways connect the suites to the central lodge area, where guests can enjoy stylish lounges, a dining room, bar facilities, two swimming pools, and spectacular viewing decks with endless bushveld vistas.
Safari experience in the Amakhala Game Reserve
Alongside the continued growth of Amakhala Game Reserve, Woodbury Lodge has evolved into a distinguished safari destination that perfectly combines luxury, comfort, and an authentic safari atmosphere. Each stay includes two guided safari drives daily, led by experienced and passionate field guides eager to share the wonders of the African bush.
During game drives, guests may pause for morning coffee surrounded by giraffe or enjoy sunset drinks overlooking the magnificent “Big Hoek” escarpment as the landscape glows beneath the evening sky. Returning to the lodge, attentive staff ensure every detail is taken care of, serving delicious South African-inspired cuisine paired with warm hospitality. Evenings are best spent around the crackling campfire, enjoying local wines while sharing stories of the day’s wildlife encounters and adventures.
