The 48-hour weekly Rovos Rail journey between Pretoria and Cape Town provides the traveller with an excellent opportunity to explore the beautiful landscapes of South Africa.

The Cape Winelands, the Karoo, the 'Big Hole' in Kimberley where a visit to the Diamond Museum is included as well as the bustles of Pretoria and Cape Town itself.

Cape Town offers a blend of cosmopolitan city life, magnificent mountains and prime wine lands, while the twin cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg from the economic heartland of South Africa and the ideal departure point for Mpumalanga’s world-famous Game Reserves including the Kruger National Park.

The 1600-kilometre exclusive Rovos train journey is a perfect illustration of South Africa as a world in one country. Travel the windswept grasslands of the gold-rich Highveld to the haunting barrenness of the Great Karoo, the spectacular mountain ranges and scenic wine lands of the Cape to the Mother City of South Africa, Cape Town, cradled by the imposing bulk of Table Mountain, Devils’ Peak and Lions Head.

Highlights of the north and southbound Rovos Rail routes include a visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein. This authentic perfectly preserved Victorian Village, which was founded by Mr Logan as a refreshment stop in 1890, also boasts an impressive museum on the Station platform.

A stop is also made in Kimberley with an opportunity to enjoy a city tour, the Mine Museum and visit the world’s most extensive human-made excavation, the ‘Big Hole’.

Rovos Rail PRETORIA TO CAPE TOWN ITINERARY


DAY 1: WEDNESDAYS and FRIDAYS

  • 11h00 Rovos Rail Private Station, Capital Park Pretoria. Depart Rovos Rail Station, Pretoria. Travel across the goldfields of the Witwatersrand. Guests may freshen up in their suites before joining fellow travellers in the lounge car and observation car.
  • 13h00 Lunch is served in the dining cars.
  • 16h30 Tea is served in the lounge and observation cars.
  • 19h30 Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Kingswood. Overnight on board. Dress: Formal

DAY 2: THURSDAYS and SATURDAYS

  • 07h00 Breakfast is served in the dining car/s until 10h00. Disembark for a tour of Kimberley, the Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole. Capital of the Northern Cape, Kimberley is well known for the discovery of diamonds that led to its establishment in 1871.
  • 13h00 Lunch is served in the dining car/s. The train travels through the Karoo.
  • 16h30 Tea is served in the lounge and observation cars.
  • 19h30 Dinner will be served in the dining car/s en route to Gemsbok. Overnight on board. Dress: Formal

DAY 3: FRIDAYS and SUNDAYS

  • 07h00 Breakfast will be served in the dining car/s until 10h00.
  • Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00. During breakfast, there is a chance for guests to disembark the train at Whitehill Siding and walk the 5km into Matjiesfontein. A member of staff will accompany the group. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Disembark at Matjiesfontein for an opportunity to stroll through the historic village. Of special interest is the museum on the platform and a collection of historic cars and railway carriages to the right of the Lord Milner Hotel. About an hour after Matjiesfontein, the train arrives at the first of four tunnels on the pass. The first tunnel is 13.5km long so guests are to be careful when walking through the train and may wish to turn on necessary lights
  • 13h00 Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train climbs ±750m down the escarpment through the Hex River Valley.
  • 16h30 Tea is served in the lounge and observation cars.
  • 18h00 The train arrives at the journey’s end: Platform 24 at Cape Town Station. Cape Town Main Station, Platform 24
