THE CAVERN DRAKENSBERG

The Cavern is a holiday resort located in the Northern Drakensberg Mountains, KwaZulu Natal South Africa. Named after the "Cannibal Cavern", The Cavern Drakensberg Resort & Spa is situated on 3000 hectares of private mountain reserve adjacent to the Ampitheatre Royal Natal National Park, which is a World Heritage Site. The Cavern Hotel is situated is located in the Northern Drakensberg, 3.5 hours from Gauteng and 3 hours from Durban on excellent tarred roads.

The Cavern Drakensberg resort has won numerous accolades and awards. Superior suites, Superior rooms and standard accommodation are available to guests, all offering spectacular views of the surrounding valleys, forests and mountainside. The Superior accommodation is set away from The Cavern resort, in tranquil gardens, giving you magnificent views of the surrounding mountains.

The thatch accommodation and facilities found at The Cavern Hotel blend nicely with the natural surroundings of the area. The Cavern is home to numerous Bushman paintings, 213 species of birds, 150 species of trees and numerous wild animals.


The resort offers guests dailyguided hikes to magnificent sights such as the Thonsela Cave, the Cannibal Cavern, the Echo Cave and Sungubala. For the more energetic, walks are organized to the Tugela Gorge and to the top of the Amphitheatre. The Cavern offers an extensive range of sport and recreational facilities, from guided walks to horse trails through splendid scenery, jeep trips and trout fishing in five well stocked dams.

Forest Retreat Health and Beauty Spa

The luxurious Forest Retreat Spa nestles in the canopy of The Cavern's indigenous Fern Forest. The qualified therapists offer relaxation massages, manicures & pedicures. Dermalogica skincare treatments are available with the Head therapist.

Unwind in magnificent surroundings. Enjoy our relaxing treatments by qualified body care therapists. We observe the strictest sterilisation and hygiene procedures and conform to a strong code of ethical conduct.

Children

The Cavern Drakensberg Resort & Spa is a child friendly family resort. The Hotel provides a separate children 's dining room for children under 7 years where parents are encouraged to join their kids during their mealtime.

The children's dining room is also set up for entertaining kids during adult meals. There are suitable DVDs, toys, and an outside play area, which is fenced off so that kids can get fresh air without the danger of running off unaccompanied by adult supervision. Other activities include face painting, play dough, finger painting and many crafts. Our staff are trained to interact with your children and they are kept amused with songs, dancing and group play.

During the day children are kept busy on the trampoline and jungle gym and there are pony rides twice a day. Canoes are available for hire on the dam and they can even try and fish. There is a small separate kiddies pool and an exciting kiddies slide into the large pool. Families do join the morning guided hikes and the shorter walks are not too strenuous. There are backpacks for carrying kids. The kiddies can assist the guide when he collects firewood to brew tea at the river or dam. Packed lunches can be ordered for those who'd like a family picnic in the mountains.

Activities

Two guided walks per day are offered to guests staying at The Cavern Drakensberg Resort & Spa. On each hike tea, coffee, juice and Cavern Crunchies are provided at a Scenic Spot, Bushman Paintings or Rock Carving. Longer full day hikes are organised with walking excursions to the Tugela Gorge and to the top of the Amphitheatre.

Horse trails and trout fishing in five dams are available on the property. Tennis, volleyball, bowls, trampoline and a swimming pool with slide are also on offer. A swimming pool, darts and table tennis are available inside with Evening Entertainment provided each night. Once week we have a magnificent Slide Show of the Drakensberg and on Saturdays we have a Dance.

A nine hole Golf Course is available 10km from The Cavern Hotel.

Dining

The Cavern Hotel offers full service meals which include healthy meals for all ages with no limits on the number of courses.

The hotel provides buffet meals during the week, weather permitting, as an alternative. The many decks, indigenous gardens, prolific bird life and warm sunny weather provide opportunities for fine outside dining. Boma Breakfasts and Sundowners are organised weekly.

A separate Children's Dining Room is available for children under 7 with a separate Children's Menu and nanny supervision while parents enjoy their meals.

Our Cave Bar is a unique feature of the Cavern and the only one in South Africa – it is a reminder of Bushman Art and their lifestyles.

Directions from Johannesburg:

Take the N3 South towards Durban, until Harrismith. From there take the N5 West towards Bethlehem for 4 km only. Turn left onto the R712 / R74 (Signposted towards Qwa-Qwa & Alternative Route to Durban) Travel for a further 8km only. Turn left following the R74 towards Bergville, and down the Oliviershoek pass. After 38km, the road levels out. Turn right towards the Northern 'Berg Resorts. After 6 km turn right again towards The Cavern, Alpine Heath and Hlalanathi. The Cavern is at the end of this 10km tarred road.

Directions from Durban:

Travel north on the N3 towards Johannesburg. After passing Estcourt Shell Ultra City, take the Ladysmith, Bergville and Northern 'Berg Resorts Offramp (R74). Turn left towards Winterton and Bergville. Travel through Winterton and 30km past Bergville. There, turn left towards Northern 'Berg Resorts. After 6 km turn right towards The Cavern, Alpine Heath and Hlalanathi. The Cavern is at the end of this 10km tarred road.
