The thrilling and exciting Sun City development changed the most unpromising region in the former homeland of Bophuthatswana, which is today the North West Province, into a popular leisure and recreation resort. The Palace of the Lost City is Sun City’s most famous attraction. Tropical jungle with palm trees and waterfalls cover what was once overgrazed farmland in the crater of an ancient volcano.
Also referred to as „the city which never sleeps“, Sun City is a glittering pleasure resort within a 2 hour driving distance from Johannesburg and Pretoria (Gauteng).
Visitors who prefer to experience the authentic Africa should stay in the nearby Pilanesberg National Park which is home to Africa’s Big Five. Game Lodges such as Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge, Bakubung Bush Lodge, Tshukudu Bush Lodge and the Ivory Treetop Lodge provide visitors with a great African experience.
Sun City was established by Mr Sol Kerzner. The son of Russian immigrants to South Africa and born in Johannesburg on 23 August 1935, Sol Kerzner has been responsible for many spectacular resort developments in many parts of the world. The exciting and fun filled Sun City Resort is dominated by the 5 star Hotel called The Palace of the Lost City. The car park for day visitors to Sun City is 2 km from the entertainment centre. An elevated sky train shuttle departs from the car park to the Sun City Cabanas Hotel, Sun City Hotel, and the Cascades Hotel.
At the Valley of the Waves at Sun City, which is located between the Cascades Hotel and the Palace Hotel, is equipped with a large scale wave making machine.
Activities at the Sun City Resort
Activities which can be arranged while staying at the Sun City Resort are:
• Hot air balloon safaris: Hot air balloon trips over the Pilanesberg National Park and the Sun City Complex are a popular safari option. Surrounded by complete silence, tourists drift over the herds of wildlife which peacefully graze within the rim of the extinct volcano. Since the wind determines the direction of the hot air balloon flight, balloons ascents are undertaken on calm days at the Pilanesberg National Park – Sun City Resort.

• Kwena Gardens Crocodile Sanctuary: At Kwena Gardens Crocodile Sanctuary, Nile crocodiles can be viewed in the natural habitat. Special walkways at the Kwena Gardens Crocodile Sanctuary lead to the observation areas.
