Introducing Springs

Situated 50 kilometres east of Johannesburg, Springs is an industrialised East Rand city that falls within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. As the city is heavily weighted towards industry, Springs is not known for its restaurants or nightlife. Despite this, several interesting sights can be visited, including lovely parks, an art gallery and collection of historic Art Deco buildings in the central business district (notably the Central Fire Station built between 1937 and 1938).

The Springs farm was first surveyed and settled in 1883. Its name was taken from the large number of springs in the area. With the discovery of coal here, the farm became a crucial way station en route to the Witwatersrand gold mines. Over time, the Springs collieries were overtaken by the richer reserves of Witbank. Economically the coal mine closure was hardly felt owing to the discovery of gold. By 1908, Springs had its first gold mines and by 1930, Springs became known as one of the world's biggest gold-producing area, boasting eight gold mines. These days, mining has been replaced by other industries, particularly manufacturing and engineering.
