The South African town of Secunda is built around coalfields in the Mpumalanga Province. Secunda was named for being the second extraction refinery producing oil from coal after the nearby town of Sasolburg. The town of Secunda was built when the construction of Sasol Two began. Sasol Two (1980) and Sasol Three (1982), which are known as Secunda CTL, is the largest coal liquefaction plant in the world.
It is here where synthetic fuel, diesel, and related fuels as well as petrochemicals from coal gasification are produced. Sasol Two and Three are large industrial refineries. The highest structure in Secunda is the 301 metre high chimney at the Sasol Three plant. This chimney is one of the tallest free-standing structures in the Southern Hemisphere.
