Introducing Randburg

Randburg belongs to the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality together with Sandton and Roodepoort.  Randburg displays all the signs of a resuscitated metro area. Its largely affluent English and Afrikaans population enjoys a range of commercial and entertainment facilities, particularly the  lovely Brightwater Commons, upmarket Cresta Centre, Northgate and Randburg Square.

The original farms of Randburg were first occupied by Afrikaans settlers during the 1850s and 1860s. By the early 1900s, the promise of gold attracted a stream of British speculators to settle north of Johannesburg. Randburg was linked to the City of Gold by a five pence tram ride. By 1959, Randburg had grown from a dusty veld township into a town with over thirty suburbs and a growing population, consequently achieving independent municipal status.  It clung to this independence until the restructuring of greater Johannesburg in the early 1990s.

Over the years, Randburg suffered a gradual urban decline owing to changing property and consumer trends.  Its outdoor malls and decentralised office units were outdated and to add insult to injury, illegal mini-bus taxi ranks and informal traders moved in to stay.  With the construction of a state of the art formalised taxi rank at Randburg Mall, the problem was solved, and in 2004 Randburg was declared a City Improvement District.

Best Kept Secret

Delta Park

Another green lung of Johannesburg's sprawling urban mass. The park is home to many species of birds, rodents, insects and small mammals. The Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary is not open to the public, however many of its birds can be viewed from the hides overlooking two dams. Road no. 3, Victory Park.
