Introducing Mookgopong - Naboomspruit

The town of Mookgophong, which used to be called Naboomspruit, is a town located in South Africa's most northern Limpopo Province. Naboomspruit / Mookgophong was established in 1910 after tin was discovered in this region of South Africa followed later by the discovery of platinum. Naboomspruit is named after the profusion of euphorbia trees, naboom, which grow along the nearby stream, spruit.  In 2006, Naboomspruit was officially renamed Mookgophong by the South African government.

Surrounded by nature reserves and hot springs, the charming town of Naboomspruit is set at the foot of the Swaershoek Mountains. Naboomspruit owes its growth to the discovery of minerals in the early 1900s.  The discovery of tin in the Naboomspruit region led to a 'tin rush' in 1910 and turned this quaint village into a pulsating boom town of speakeasies, tents, cabarets and trading stores. Tin and fluorspar are still mined in this region today. 

Naboomspruit / Mookgophong has a thriving farming industry which consists of cattle, maize, tobacco, groundnuts and citrus fruit.  There are numerous trails and opportunities for leisurely walks and hiking tours in and around Naboomspruit / Mookgophong where lovers of the outdoors can enjoy the unique Bushveld flora of the beautiful Waterberg region. Various interesting motor routes can also be followed to explore this exciting area.

Naboomspruit / Mookgophong is home to a rich variety of game and birds. Nylsvley, which is a small town located close by, is known for its water birds.  Rare rhinos form part of the Malatipark game park while the Frikkie Geyser Dam attracts anglers.  Several private game reserves in the Naboomspruit / Mookgophong region offer excellent facilities for trophy hunting.
