It encompasses three areas – Melrose Arch, Melrose Estate and Melrose North – the latter being the least affected by the urban sprawl of cluster living developments that have taken over much of Johannesburg's northern suburbs.

Melrose has an enviable location close to Wanderer's Cricket Stadium, Sandton City and the Bohemian neighbourhood of Norwood, with other attractions, such as Johannesburg Zoo, just a short drive away. James and Ethel Gray Park

A tranquil little park sandwiched between the suburbs of Birdhaven and Melrose North, and the M1. A recent R5-million upgrade includes new ablution facilities and walkways that meander through manicured lawns and indigenous gardens. The Melrose Bird Sanctuary and a Polish war memorial (the Katyn Forest Memorial) can be found here. Atholl Oaklands Road, Abbotsford.

Getting there

To reach Melrose from the airport, follow the R24 to Johannesburg. At Gillooly's Interchange, take the N3 northbound to Pretoria. At the Sandton Buccleuch Interchange, follow the M1 south and take the M30 Corlett Drive exit. Melrose is approximately 30min from O.R. Tambo International Airport, 5min from Sandton City and 10min from the Johannesburg City Centre.
