Introducing Mafikeng
Mahikeng / Mafikeng in South Africa is the capital city of the North-West Province. This South African town was first mispelt by British settlers as Mafeking and by the end of the Apartheid the name had changed to Mafikeng. In February 2010, Lulu Xingwana approved the town to be changed again to Mahikeng.
Being the original headquarters of the Barolong people, the town of Mafikeng was founded in the 1880s by British mercenaries granted land by a Barolong chief. The settlement was named Mafikeng which is a Setswana name meaning 'place of stones'.
