Introducing Heidelberg
Nestled at the foot of the Suikerbosrand mountains, in one of South Africa's prime agricultural districts, lies the town of Heidelberg. Heidelberg has a thriving residential and industrial community and its well-preserved Victorian architecture make it a picturesque town to visit. Heidelberg developed around a small trading station established in 1862 by German, H.J. Ueckermann on the farm Langlaagte.
Over the years, Heidelberg has served as the capital of the Boer-ruled Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (South African Republic), the office of South Africa's Mining Commissioner and the site of a British-built concentration camp during the Second Boer War.
Heidelberg is also the town where Eugene Terre'Blanche founded his far right secessionist political party, the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB). Evidence of this fascinating history is scattered across town and a number of declared monuments and heritage sites can still be viewed, including Klipkerk (1890), St Ninians Anglican Church (1895), the 1939 Triumvirate Monument and the Old Jail (1888).
Best Kept Secret
Bakoond
