Introducing Harare
Harare is the capital of Zimbabwe. This major city in Zimbabwe has a strong appreciation for cultural and historical heritage and a number of the older buildings have been preserved. The Mining Pension Fund Building which is located at Central Avenue & Second Street is one example. Additional historical buildings can be found along the Robert Mugabe Road between Second Street and Julius Nyerere Way.
The National Gallery is home to a valuable and interesting national collection as well as hosts travelling international exhibitions and has a permanent display of some outstanding Shona soft-stone carvings. The priceless collection of Rhodesiana and Africana in the form of diaries, notebooks and reports of various origins, are kept in the National Archives. The original works of some of the greatest names in African exploration and missionary can be viewed here.
Other institutions which are well worth visiting during a visit in Harare include the Queen Victoria Museum and the Harare City Library which was formerly the Queen Victoria Memorial Library, both of which are located at the Civic Centre in Rotten Row.
The city of Harare, Zimbabwe, was laid out with large open spaces such as the 68ha National Botanic Garden which features more than 900 species of wild trees and shrubs from all over the country. The Mukuvisi Woodlands is 277 hectares of remarkably preserved natural woodland which straddles the banks of the small Mukuvisi stream. A variety of birdlife and wild animal species including giraffe, zebra, impala, tsessche, wildebeest, bushbuck, steenbuck, reed buck and eland can be observed here.
The Kopje, which is a granite hill rising above the south-west corner of central Harare, is a great place from where one can admire great views of the city.
The vast number of rocks of black serpentine stone found around Zimbabwe have encouraged the development of stone carvings by Zimbabwe's talented artists. The Chapungu Sculpture Park has exhibitions by numerous artists.
