Introducing Grahamstown
Grahamstown in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province is known as the heart of Frontier Country, a busy commercial, cultural and educational centre.
It has a small town Victorian appeal and is home to many churches. Grahamstown nestles in a valley between the coastal plain and the hinterland of the Eastern Cape. It is named after Colonel John Graham who established a military post on an abandoned farm near the southeast coast in 1812.
The 1820 Settlers, who were not of farming stock, were enticed by the Cape government to farm in the area but after a few years of struggling they preferred an urban life as they were more artisans and craftsmen and Grahamstown changed from a military settlement to a thriving trading centre.
Grahamstown has many well known schools as well as a university (Rhodes University
