Introducing Christiana

The agricultural town of Christiana is located on the banks of the Vaal River in of South Africa.  Christiana is situated on the N12 between the towns of Bloemhof and Warrenton, on the way to Kimberley, Northern Cape.  Christiana is the administrative centre of the Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality in South Africa.

In the 1870s, when diamonds were discovered in the Vaal River, the former Transvaal Government established a settlement on the banks of the river in order to control and alleviate land disputes over diamond discoveries in this region. The town of Christiana was established on the farm Zoutpansdrift.  It received its name after the only daughter of President Pretorius of the old Transvaal.

The town of Christiana contains one of the biggest diggers' bells ever to exist worldwide. The bell is currently under water in the Vaal River as it once sank and ended in the drowning of several diggers. There were a few attempts to get the diggers' bell out, but it was in vain as it is surrounded by too much mud.  Today, the economy of Christiana is driven by the production of beef, maize, sorghum, groundnuts and cotton.

Tourist attractions in and around Christiana, South Africa

Tourist attractions in this region of South Africa include the Diggers' Diamond Museum,  San Bushman rock art and Stows Kopje.  The Diggers' Diamond Museum features authentic digging equipment and old photographs of the town's diamond industry.  The famous San Bushman rock art provide excellent examples which can be viewed 6km outside of Christiana on the Farm Stowlands.  Stows Kopje presents prehistoric rock engravings which have been declared a national monument.

Hot mineral springs

The Aventura Vaal Spa is located 3km north of Christiana on the banks of the Vaal River.  The Aventura Vaal Spa offers hot mineral springs, a well-stocked game reserve with an abundance of game including white rhino, giraffe as well as excellent angling opportunities.
 
Willem Pretorius Game Reserve

The Willem Pretorius Game Reserve is home to a great variety of game and bird life. The Allemanskraal Dam forms the central part of the Willem Pretorius Game Reserve and on the northern side of this dam is a range of hillocks and on the summit of one of these is Doringberg.  It is here where one can find a well-preserved ruin of a prehistoric settlement. Years ago this belonged to the Leghoya people who built extremely small huts, cattle kraals and walls, all from stone, but without mortar.
