Introducing Chobe Park
The game rich safari region in the north-east of Botswana, Southern Africa, can be divided into three distinct regions. These regions are:
- The Chobe River in the north which forms Botswana’s border with Namibia part of which lies within the Chobe National Park
- The Savuti Channel and Marsh in the centre of the Chobe National Park
- The Linyanti River and Linyanti Game Reserve which is situated along the western boundary of Chobe National Park.
One can find a migratory route between the Chobe National Park and Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park. These areas are known for having the greatest concentration of elephants in the world. It is estimated that there are between 45,000 and 90,000 elephants in this region of Southern Africa.
The Chobe River has its source in the highlands of Angola. The Chobe River changes names a few times: it enters as the Kwando River and immediately becomes the Linyanti River, then the Itenge Riverand is finally called the Chobe River. The area around the Chobe River is home to a variety of habitats and is rich in flora and fauna, with mopane woodland, mixed combretum, sandveld, floodplain, grasslands and riverine woodland. Many trees here have suffered considerable damage from the high numbers of elephants, who push them over and rip off the bark.
The most popular area in and just outside the Chobe National Park is the 15km stretch of the Chobe River from Kasane town to the Serondela campsite. It is highly recommended to enjoy a trip on this river to see hundreds of hippos and crocodiles. Both hippo's and elephants epitomise this park more than any other animals and are often featured on the cover of brochures to the area. The only subject more photographed in the Chobe National Park in Botswana are the magnificent sunsets which can be observed here.
