Introducing Thabazimbi
The iron mining town of Thabazimbi is located in South Africa's Limpopo province. The name Thabazimbi can be translated as 'mountain of iron' based on the fact that a large iron ore reef was discovered in 1919 by J.H. Williams. This mine features one of the largest mining shafts in Africa. Kumba Iron Ore/ Kumba Resources is today the principal operator of the iron ore mine.
The Marakele National Park is located about 20 km north-east of Thabazimbi in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains which are characterised by contrasting mountain landscapes, hills and valleys, as well as a variety of wildlife.
The Thabazimbi district is home to a large concentration of private game reserves. Some of the best game reserves of South Africa are located in this region offering conducted game drives, excellent accommodation and outstanding cuisine while access from Gauteng is by car or plane.
