Introducing Springbok & Surrounds
Located on the N7 highway which connects Cape Town with Namibia, Springbok is the largest town in the Namaqualand area in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Springbok nestles in a narrow valley between the high granite domes of the magnificent Klein Koperberge. Copper mining was the reason for the establishment of this town. Even though mining activities here have decreased, Springbok remains an important administrative capital in the region and due to its location a favourite stopover for tourists on their way to Namibia. The main industries here are tourism, mining, commerce and farming.
The streets in Springbok lead off from a central little hill which features Namaqualand’s unique flora, one example being the almost leafless Quiver tree. The branches of the Quiver tree were used by Bushmen to hold their arrows. This region of South Africa is known for the spectacular sping flowers which transform the landscape to colorful carpets. The scrubland explodes into colour from thousands of flowers hidden in the dry dusty earth, brought to life by winter rains.
