Danie Theron Memorial, Potchefstroom and Carletonville
Danie Theron Memorial:
The Danie Theron Memorial marks the place where Danie Theron, one of the legendary figures of the South African War, was killed in a skirmish against a British detachment in September 1900.
Potchefstroom:
The city of Potchefstroom lies on the banks of the Mooi River and has the longest avenue (7km) in the southern hemisphere of oak trees (700 in total).
Historical Buildings include: Civic Centre cruciform-shaped Dutch Reformed Church, the Old Presidency, a small house where the first President of the South African Republic (M. Pretorius) lived for many years, the neo-Rennaisance style Landdrost (Magistrate’s) Offices and Totius House, residence of Dr. J. du Toit, the Afrikaans author poet and translator of the Bible into Afrikaans.
There are 3 house museums: Totius House, President Pretorius Museum and Goetz/Fleischack Museum, these are the only surviving examples of typical townhouses built in 1850. Potchefstroom Museum has exhibits on the history and development of the area and a valuable collection of Otto Landsberg paintings.
Carletonville:
The South African town of Carletonville owes its existence to the rich gold deposits occurring in the area. Mining dates back to the 1930’s and is the richest gold-producing area in the world with the deepest mine Western Deep Levels, whose main shaft reaches down 3,581 below the surface.
