Cathedral Peak Golf Course at the Cathedral Peak Hotel, Drakensberg (KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa)
The Cathedral Peak Golf Course is located in Winterton in the Drakensberg mountain range of KwaZulu-Natal. Nestling in spectacular berg scenery, the Cathedral Peak golf course was designed and built by Roly Taylor with the collaboration of his well-known brother, Reg. This golf course in KwaZulu-Natal which has been termed "the thinking golfer's course" was opened on 13 January 1996 by Dayle Hayes.
Cathedral Peak Hotel's immaculate 9 hole golf course offers alternate tees for an 18-hole game. The new club house boasts rest rooms, lounge area, pub and a terrace with spectacular mountain views - the perfect 19th hole.

The Hugh Baiocchi designed golf course is rated as one of the most scenically memorable golf layouts in South Africa. In recent years Kevin Curren has also had his hand in upgrading the original 18-hole course, and their completed design has received deserved accolades for successfully blending the natural attributes of the terrain and the surrounding beauty with the modern demands of a quality golf course.
The Champagne Sports Resort Golf Course is fairly open but has many hazards including 84 bunkers and prominent water hazards. The course becomes especially tricky in the wetlands and is a fair challenge for the low handicapper as well as being playable by the weekend golfer.
Facilities include a club house, carts and clubs for hire. Golfers may make use of the restaurant up at the Champagne Sports Resort hotel. The clubhouse is easily accessible from the Champagne Sports Resort and golfers have access to caddies, motorized golf carts, a well-stocked Pro-Shop, as well as lessons from the Resident Professional Golfer. The clubhouse is also equipped with both ladies and gentleman's locker room and a bar, and light meals are served in the golf lounge and on the magnificent verandah which overlooks the golf course and the mountains beyond.
The Kikuyu fairways, manicured to perfection, are generously wide and bordered by light rough and many varieties of trees. This is not an easy course though - the 84 bunkers that line the fairways and guard the Bent grass greens are ruthless with misdirected shots. Water hazards are prominent and the course becomes especially challenging in the wetlands.
Teeing off on the signature first hole is both thrilling and daunting. This hole, a par-five measuring 605 meters, is not only the longest hole on the course, but also in South Africa. The elevated tee stands taller than the clubhouse and your drive will have to carry over the Strekspruit Ravine and rough, to the fairway far below. The green is around the corner of a dogleg-left where two bunkers come into play.
Champagne Sports Resort with its 18-hole championship golf course, roaming herds of Blesbok and rare birdlife inhabiting the estate, ensures that there is something for everyone to enjoy. With five dams stocked with bass or trout, exceptional sporting facilities and cultural activities, this resort provides a balance between recreation for sports enthusiasts and tranquility for those seeking relaxation.
Only a four-and-a-half hour drive from Johannesburg and two hours from Durban, the resort is ideally situated for both relaxing leisure weekends and for corporate conferences.
