Mqanduli

It is named after a nearby hill. Mqunduli means grindstone-maker. In 1876 it was proclaimed a magistracy and was once an important administrative and commercial centre of Bomvanaland.

Dick King Memorial:

This memorial is erected on the route taken by R.P. King (Dick King) during his epic ride from Port Natal (Durban) to Grahamstown to summon help.  In 1842 a 250-strong British force was besieged by the Natal Voortrekkers and realizing their desperate situation King and his attendant rode this 960km journey in ten days to get help.

Hole-in-the-Wall

This impressive rock stands at the mouth of the Mpako River and has a giant opening carved through its centre by the waves. It was named by Captain Vidal of the vessel Baracouta, sent by the British Admiralty in 1823 to survey the coastline. The local Bomvana people named it ‘EsiKhaleni’ or the ‘Place of Thunder’. At times during high tide the waves make such a noise it can be heard throughout the valley.

Nelson Mandela National Museum

Nelson Mandela National Museum

The Nelson Mandela National Museum in Mthatha has been dedicated to Nelson Mandela, one of the world's greatest statesmen in South Africa.  It honours his lifelong fight for freedom.  It was opened by Mandela on the 10th anniversary of his release from prison in February 1990. It has 3 components, the Mandela Museum  in Umtata, a cultural centre and youth centre in the Village of Qunu, which is 31km away; and a memorial near the remains of his family homestead in Mveso.  Retrace the ex-president's childhood steps through Qunu and Mveso. View the Nobel Peace Prize which he won jointly with F.W. de
Klerk plus all the gifts given to the former president.

The Nelson Mandela National Museum opened its doors on the 11th of February 2000 and is visited by thousands of South African and international tourists every year. It is considered one of South Africa's most significant heritage institutions.  The Museum houses an exhibition on Mandela's book " Long Walk to Freedom," gives an account of his life in context, and preserves a collection of gifts given to Mandela. It is situated in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa, one of the poorest provinces in the country and its inhabitants are rightfully proud of their favourite son.
