The district of Maseru in Lesotho covers a region of 4,279 km² and is home to about 700,000 people.   Being the only city in this district of Lesotho, Maseru is also the name of the district's capital.  Furthermore, Maseru is also the capital of the Kingdom of Lesotho.

Maseru is the largest urban area in Lesotho and therefore the only city as the other urban areas are considered towns.  The name Maseru can be translated as "Place of the red earth".  The city of Maseru is located on Lesotho's western border adjacent to South Africa's Free State Province with the the frontier being the Caledon River.
