The Municipal Council of Lephalale in South Africa was established in 2000.  This South African municipality is a combination of two municipalities, namely the Ellisras/Marapong Transitional Local Council and the Ellisras/Tswelopele Transitional Local Council.The Lephalale Municipality is the biggest municipality in South Africa's Limpopo Province in terms of geographical size which is 19 605 square kilometers. 

The Lephalale municipality is home to about 150 000 inhabitants.  The main town in this municipality is Lephalale / Ellisras, which is located between 23 degrees 30` and 24 degrees 00` south latitude and 27 degrees 30`and 28 degrees 00`east longitude.Distinctive bushveld landscape stretches from the Limpopo river in the west to the Waterberg mountain range in the south east.Lephalale town is positioned west of the Mokolo river, which is a tributary to the Limpopo river, 820 meters above sea level.
