The Zimbali Country Club with its two magnificent five star hotels Zimbali Lodge and Fairmont Zimbali Resort is the ideal venue for the discerning golfer. Tom Weiskopf, which is a former British and South African Open Golf Champion, designed the spectacular Zimbali golf course which challenges players of all handicaps in the most delightful surroundings.
Offering irresistible ocean and forest views, exceptional water and wetland features and an inspiring natural setting, the Zimbali Country Club has developed the reputation of a memorable course with charisma and challenge.
Now in its twelveth year (2008), the Zimbali Golf Course has matured. Gradual adjustments have been made to improve user friendliness. Landing areas are wider and there is improved definition from tee positions. However, the need to retain the ecology and extensive wildlife habitats dictates the positioning, abundance and controlled maintenance of the semi and long rough areas. This ultimately necessitates some precise shot making indeed and also contributes to an entertaining challenge for all players.
The remains of a ruined farmhouse framed around an ageing wild fig tree dominates the entrance to the clubhouse. Again construction had to take place around nature and this feature not only marks the entrance of the modern, colonial-styled clubhouse, it also bears testimony to the preservation ethos of the developers of Zimbali Country Club.
The clubhouse at the Zimbali Golf Course has been designed and decorated in an African Classical theme, with extensive use of hand crafted décor, fittings and furnishings. Raised decks provide unparalleled elevated course and sea views, trees grow through decking leading down to the 18th green and parking for the course was carefully planned to minimize impact on the forest surrounds. Impeccable service, superb catering, a well appointed Golf Shop and plush cloakrooms enhance the venue even further.
The Zimbali Country Club in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, offers full amenities for golf, including golf carts (required), a halfway house, putting greens, a driving range, tennis courts and a bar and lounge facility which is of the highest order.
In terms of the ultimate golfing experience, Zimbali is amongst the top 10 courses in South Africa to receive the Complete Golfer's Five-star Golf Experience Award; based on service excellence, top-class clubhouse facilities, golf course conditioning and last but not least the overall lingering experience.
Zimbali Country Club and Golf Course is rated independently by GOLF DIGEST magazine as a top 250 South African golf course, aswell as a top 5 finest golfing experiences in South Africa.
The Zimbali Lakes development will be the next major phase of development and will boast an additional 18-holes in the form of a Gary Player design golf course, country club, driving range and golf academy.

In 1924, development on the Natal Estates Sports Club gegan. An 18 hole course was developed along with additional facilities for the Natal Estates Limited staff. In 1946, a more substantial clubhouse was opened and membership extended to 'town' members. This was to mark a historical and trying period ranging from flood damage to a fire that reduced the magnificent clubhouse to a mass of rubble. From this heartbreaking ruin arose the highly acclaimed Mount Edgecombe Country Club.
In 1988, the magnificent clubhouse was rebuilt and second 18 hole course developed by Moreland Developments. Over the years, the Club has hosted Mount Edgecombe Trophy – a PGA event, the SA Amature Championship, another landmark in the history and development of one of South Africa’s most popular, picturesque and testing golf courses.
Plans for the second course began in 1994. Daysen, De Villiers and Van dev Merwe were commissioned to design the championship course directly south of the existing course on Estate 1. The topographical features, undulating hills with isolated indigenous bush, a stream running from East to West, the Pani Dam and two sensitive wetlands were taken into account when the development began.
The design philosophy adopted by the golf course architects was a course that is challenging, but fair – where a serious golfer could test his skills but an accasional golfer could enjoy the game.
Mount Edgecombe is now the only visually pleasing ambience reminescent of yesteryear. Estate residents are automatically members of the prestigious Mount Edgecombe Country Club and are encouraged to make full use it it’s facilities. In addition to the two 18 hole golf courses, these include tennis and squash courts, bowling greens, swimming pools and a 7km golf cart path, which is also used for jogging, walking and cycling.
In addition to the main clubhouse, a second clubhouse has been built overlooking the Pani Dam, where members relax and enjoy the sweeping velvet green vistas of the golf course. Environmental aspects have also been created for the wide range of bird species found on the Estate. Great care has been taken to preserve the existing wetlands, marshlands and grasslands.
