Introducing Kuruman & Surrounds
The South African town of Kuruman nestles at the foot of a range of low hills and is characterised by the renowned 'eye' which is the source of the Kuruman River. At Gaseonyane, the eye gushes twenty million litres of water daily, and from this fountain Kuruman and its surrounding area draws its water.
Kuruman's name comes from a chief called Kudumane who once lived in this area of South Africa. In 1824, a mission station was built for the local tribe and it became the best-known frontier post and base for famous explorers such as David Livingstone. The town has since become known as the fountain of Christianity in Africa.
The original church of Kuruman has been perfectly preserved and presents itself in best condition, as are other historic houses. Captain Levenson laid out the town in 1886 and today the town is an important area for cattle and dairy farming as well as the mining of asbestos, manganese, lime and iron.
The town of Kuruman has established a Raptor Route, where one can explore the birdlife of the region. There is also a Raptor Rehabilitation Centre in Tseneng Road.
