George Golf Course: hole by hole description

Hole One
This deceptively difficult and very picturesque opening hole has a dam on the left and trees on the right which all come into play. A well placed bunker makes the approach shot to this green fairly difficult.
Par 4 Stroke 13 Blue 316 White 305 Red 285

Hole Two
This mammoth par 5 starts off with a tricky tee shot through a couple of large trees onto a fairway, which doglegs to the left. Don’t be surprised to be hitting in a longer iron for your third shot.
Par 5 Stroke 7 Blue 531 White 510 Red 422

Hole Three
A well-placed drive is imperative on this hole, as the green is guarded on the right side by large trees and on the left front by a strategically placed bunker. The undulating green allows for some interesting pin placements.
Par 4 Stroke 3 Blue 375 White 364 Red 310

Hole Four
This hole is a short par 4 on any day. The signature feature on this hole is the bunkers on the left and right sides of the fairway, as these bunkers are in play for most golfers. Use of a long iron or fairway wood is often the best option for your drive on this hole.
Par 4 Stroke 17 Blue 324 White 308 Red 278

Hole Five
Some very pretty trees on the right hand side of the fairway are the only real obstacles on this hole. A drive down the left of the fairway will leave you an open shot to this large par 4 green.
Par 4 Stroke 11 Blue 333 White 314 Red 290

Hole Six
This is the only par 3 on the front nine. The large bunker on the left of the green and a mound on the right, means that missing this green will normally end in dropping at least one shot to par.
Par 3 Stroke 15 Blue 158 White 135 Red 123

Hole Seven
This par 4 dogleg right has a well-earned stroke 1 rating. The view of the mountain will test your concentration, so be sure to finish the hole before you stop to stand and look in awe of this hole’s beautiful setting.
Par 4 Stroke 1 Blue 412 White 397 Red 333

Hole Eight
The way to play this hole is to hit a long iron or wood to the right of the dangerous left-hand bend of this hole. Some interesting trees and bunkers guard most of this green.
Par 4 Stroke 9 Blue 307 White 291 Red 267

Hole Nine
This par 4 is one of the most intimidating driving holes on the course. However, if you miss the wall of trees on your right and the lateral hazard on your left with your drive, the approach shot to the green is very straightforward
Par 4 Stroke 5 Blue 373 White 351 Red 323

Hole Ten
The first hole on the back nine is characterised by large trees guarding the left and right sides of the fairway. The out of bounds fence only really comes into play at the green where a shot pulled to the left of the green will often end up out of bounds.
Par 4 Stroke 6 Blue 351 White 334 Red 318

Hole Eleven
A good tee shot on this par 5 will leave you with a straightforward approach to the green. All golfers must however be aware of the out of bounds fence running down the entire length of the left hand side of the hole. This fence separates the golf course form the King George Protea Hotel.
Par 5 Stroke 10 Blue 490 White 461 Red 420

Hole Twelve
The drive down this hole will always feed from left to right, so a drive on the left of the fairway will keep you well away from the dangerous trees on the right. If you can, you may want to ask a local golfer for some tips on how the green breaks, because it can be confusing.
Par 4 Stroke 8 Blue 326 White 311 Red 298

Hole Thirteen
This is the first of the three par 3’s on the back nine. This is the shortest of all par 3’s on the golf course, it has been known to be one of the most difficult. With all the slopes on this green, getting the pace and direction correct is crucial.
Par 3 Stroke 18 Blue 144 White 124 Red 111

Hole Fourteen
The trick to making a good score on this hole is to keep your drive well right. Large trees on the left tend to hide most of the green if your drive finds the middle or left hand side of the fairway. Long hitters do tend to hit this par 5 green in two quite regularly.
Par 5 Stroke 16 Blue 459 White 444 Red 390

Hole Fifteen
This amazing par 3 has an elevated tee down to a large green. This corner of the course is peaceful and quiet, so take some time to reflect on the beauty that this course has to offer, and try to forget about some of those bad shots you may have played up to now. Eagle opportunity!
Par 3 Stroke 14 Blue 166 White 146 Red 137

Hole Sixteen
This is the third and last par 5 you will play on the back nine. The hole has a bunker on the right of the fairway, which is well positioned to catch any golfer trying to cut the corner. A bunker also guards the front of the green, so laying up for your second shot is normally a better option.
Par 5 Stroke 12 Blue 468 White 449 Red 412

Hole Seventeen
Finally you’ve got to the signature hole on the golf course. The par 3 has always been regarded as one of the best par 3’s in the world. It’s a long par 3 that leaves you no room for error and is therefore rated as the second most difficult hole on the back nine. This hole rated as one of the top 500 in the world, as well as the best par 3 in South Africa.
Par 3 Stroke 4 Blue 181 White 162 Red 146

Hole Eighteen
18 is the most difficult hole on the back nine. It has a large dam and thick bush on the left of the fairway, and the fairway feeds towards these hazards. Your approach shot down to the green has to be well positioned, because if you hit your ball right of the green, you could find yourself hitting out of what the locals so proudly call “the snake pit”. Bobby Locke’s best two finishing holes in South Africa.
Par 4 Stroke 2 Blue 388 White 371 Red 323

Hole by Hole: Fancourt Hotel & Country Estate in George, Garden Route (South Africa)

Please note that all distances on the fairways are to the front of the greens and the flag positions are indicated by colour-code on the score card.

1st 383m Par 4 Str 9
A great new opening hole, there is no need to let rip with the driver here. A fairway wood, avoiding the bunker on the left is perfect, which will leave a mid iron into the green, which can be very tough depending on the pin position. Your putting stroke will certainly be tested.

2nd Par 3 178m Str 17
The tee shot is hit from high above the hole, so take at least one club less. The green is large and receptive, which is why this is the second easiest hole on the course.

3rd Par 4 416m Str 3
If you’re a long hitter, have a go at clearing the bunkers on the right, as that is the best approach to the green. The approach from the left of the fairway is particularly tough as the green is quite shallow and protected by a large bunker on the left.

4th Par 5 527m Str 13
Open your shoulders on the drive here, favouring the left side of the fairway. The approach to the green is easier from the left as the water now comes all the way into the right side of the fairway, short of the green.

5th Par 4 389m Str 15
There is more space in the fairway than it looks off the tee. Try to stay on the right half of the fairway, which will take the bunker on the left of the green out of play, making the approach into the green much easier.

6th Par 4 418 Str 1
The best route here is to take on the fairway bunker on the left, leaving a much easier approach into the green. The water hazard is intimidating, but shouldn’t present too much of a difficulty if the approach is from the left.

7th Par 4 427 Str 5
A tough driving hole, that demands that the tee shot is long and favouring the right. Anything left and the approach is blocked by tall trees. The long green rises towards the back, so anything short will make for a tough two-putt.

8th Par 3 182m Str 11
Keep left! The water creeps up the right side of this green, so any tee shot that drifts right is likely to find a watery end. A large bunker on the left will catch anything too conservative, leaving a nightmare greenside bunker shot to the flag!

9th Par 5 541m Str 7
Like the first, a totally new hole. The best tee shot favours the right, but only the longest hitters can realistically have a go at this green in two. There is more space than one realises to lay up on the left, leaving a short to mid iron into the well-guarded green.

10th 496m Par 5 Str 16
A long downhill tee shot here, keep left if you want to have a chance at going at the green. The hole doglegs to the right and the green is protected by water most of the way around the right side. The lay-up shot is left of the fairway bunkers short of the green, which will leave a short iron into the green.

11th 354m Par 4 Str 12
Consider laying up short of the bunker on the right, as this is the best route into the green. The longer hitter can have a go at clearing the bunker off the tee, but it may not be worth the risk. Going left leaves a trickier shot into the green over the greenside bunkers.

12th 190 Par 3 Str 6
Left here is trouble! Do not be suckered into firing at the pin if it is placed on the left side of the green. Balls that pitch on the right half of the green will tend to feed left anyway, so this is the smart play.

13th 441m Par 4 Str2
This hole has been much toughened, with the back tee stretched backwards, bringing the water into play on the drive. Longer hitters off the club tee can have a go at clearing the fairway bunker, but beware of the out-of-bounds that extends along the left of the hole and which is very much in play near the green.

14th 392m Par 4 Str 8
There is a premium on accuracy off this tee to avoid the large fairway bunker on the right, but there are bunkers on the left too, so grip-it-and-rip-it is not the smart play here. You will be left with an approach with a fairly long iron, making par a good score here.

15th 391m Par 4 Str 4
Keeping your tee shot a little right here will leave you with the ideal approach to the raised green, taking the greenside bunker largely out of play. It may be a good idea to take an extra club to get the ball all the way to the hole.

16th 315m Par 4 Str 14
This short par four is worth having a go at off the tee, as the only real danger is the bunker short of the green. Use that bunker as the target off the tee. If you want a full approach shot to the green, use a long iron off the tee.

17th 190m Par 3 Str 10
This is a scary par three for the average golfer with its long carry over water, but the green is large and receptive, so ignore it and go for the flag! If you insist on being conservative, favour the left side of the green as there is plenty of space in front of the green, which will keep mis-hit shots dry.

18th 484m Par 5 Str 18
This is a wonderful finishing hole and should be a straightforward par. However, the temptation to have a go at the green is great if you have hit it down the left and long off the tee. If you are going to lay up short of the water hazard, try to leave yourself a full pitch into the green, rather than a tricky half shot which brings the water back into play.

Oubaai Golf Course

Oubaai Golf Course

Oubaai Golf Course at the Hyatt Regency Oubaai Golf Resort & Spa, Garden Route (South Africa)

The prestigious Oubaai Golf Course at the Hyatt Regency Oubaai, South Africa, is the first Ernie Els signature course in the country. The Oubaai golf course design allows for a challenge to all levels of golfer and is a testimony to the talents of South Africa’s favourite golfing son.

Located approximately 10km from George Airport on the coastline of the scenic Garden Route near Herolds Bay, the 18 hole Oubaai Golf Course is a championship layout. It is rated by Ernie Els, a two-time winner of the US Open and a British Open title-holder, as one of his favourite courses in the world.

A traditional Links layout, the Oubaai golf course has nine holes out and nine holes back. This has enabled the club to offer a unique two-tee operation, the first being an exclusive members' only area on the 1st tee and a visitor section on the 10th tee. Each area has its own clubhouse for golfers to enjoy the tranquillity and benchmark golfing experience offered by Oubaai.

The layout of the course demands the full gambit of shots needed to score well. There are five par-3s and five par-5s. The par-5s are all genuine par-5, as the shape of the hole and bunkering persuade golfers to lay up... or, of course, go for broke! The par-3s are crucial to good scoring; they vary in length, so club choice will differ on each hole as distance and wind condition come to bear. All greens are well bunkered and elevation cleverly used to increase the thought process required on each tee shot.

By far the most photographed hole on the Oubaai golf course is the par-3 17th; the green is below you and framed by the ocean, which influences you to short-club. However, the short distance of the hole (144m) from the back tee and the downhill elevation can offer a false sense of security. It is prudent to remember the four bunkers guarding the green and, with the breeze coming in off the sea, that can add up to an extra three clubs on those special Southern Cape days! All of a sudden, you are aiming at a much smaller target! It does, incidentally, make the hole even more memorable if you are fortunate enough to sight a whale in the Indian Ocean during your time spent in this corner of the course.

Equally impressive is the imposing par-3 6th, which transports you to another world as you descend to the tee box. The green is framed by the Outeniqua Mountains in the distance. Immediately in front of you the gorge presents a carry of 160m, which you need to negotiate to reach the green; accuracy of flight is imperative as steep run-off areas and deep bunkers surround the target. The Gwaing River flows far below and, behind you to the right, the ocean remains in sight, albeit distant. On a good day, you can spot the fish eagles that nest on an island in the gorge.

In a short period of time, the spectacular Oubaai Golf Course at South Africa's beautiful Garden Route has become known as the benchmark of quality golf and excellent service. If you appreciate a memorable, challenging and enjoyable adventure with great views, then Oubaai will provide you with an unforgettable experience.

Outeniqua Golf Course

Outeniqua Golf Course

Outeniqua Golf Course at the Fancourt Hotel & Country Estate, Garden Route (South Africa)

The Outeniqua Golf Course is one of two majestic 18-hole Parkland layouts at the Fancourt Hotel & Country Estate at South Africa's magnificent Garden Route. Designed by legendary Grand Slam golfer Gary Player, the Outeniqua Golf Course is similar in character to its sibling Montagu Golf Course at Fancourt, and its challenging design and fine conditioning will ensure an excellent test for all levels of golfers. As with all courses at Fancourt, there are a variety of tees from which to choose to play, ensuring that golfers are unlikely to ever feel overpowered by the course.

As with the Montagu golf course at Fancourt, play is restricted to Fancourt hotel residents, members and their guests, so you are unlikely to ever feel crowded on the course, however, it is always a good idea to book in advance to ensure that you get your desired tee time.

The warm-up area, featuring a full-length range and a chipping and bunker practice area, is available to all golfers before play.  Golf carts are available for hire, weather permitting. Please note that to improve your playing enjoyment and to ensure a steady pace-of-play, it is mandatory for at least two caddies to accompany each fourball, and one caddy per twoball.

Hole by hole description: Outeniqua Golf Course at the Fancourt Hotel & Country Estate, Garden Route (South Africa)

Note that all distances on the fairways are to the front of the greens and the flag positions are indicated by colour-code on the score card.

1st Par 4 316m Str 16
A gentle opening par four with a fairly wide landing area, either choose to lay up short of the large fairway bunker on the left or aim for the narrower part of the fairway to the right. A mid or short iron will be enough to reach the raised green.

2nd Par 5 497m Str 18
An easy par five – keep the drive towards the left of the fairway if you intend going for the green in two. A bunker at the front of the sloping green must be avoided if going for the green.

3rd Par 4 398m Str 4
A long par four, again keep the drive left. A mid to long iron approach will be needed, but beware of the water to the right of the green which will catch any shot leaked to the right.

4th Par 3 184m Str 12
An intimidating tee shot over water is the feature of this picturesque hole. If the flag is on the left, play conservatively for the middle of the green as there is water lurking at the back left of the green as well!

5th Par 4 301m Str 8
A great risk and reward par four that invites the longer hitter to have a go at the green, but the water on the right is dangerously in play. A long iron or fairway wood off the tee is the safer play, leaving a short pitch into the green.

6th Par 4 358m Str 14
Avoid the large cavernous bunker on the left here, which will leave a short iron into a wide, yet shallow green. Your shot should be the right distance as you don’t want to be long, as there is a steep drop-off at the back of the green.

7th Par 3 186m Str 10
The tee shot is played from high above the green, so take at least one less club. Large bunkers left and right will swallow errant shots and small bunkers at the back will save long shots from getting lost!

8th Par 5 529m Str 6
Don’t try to cut across the right slope too much here, as the ball is unlikely to come back down to the fairway and you’ll be left with a tough shot with the ball high above your feet. The fairway rises sharply to the green, so take an extra club for your approach.

9th Par 4 396m Str 2
Keep the tee shot left of the large fairway bunkers on the right, which will open up the view of the green. There is a stream short and left of the green, which adds to the hole’s difficulty, especially when hitting a long iron at the flag. A four is a great way to finish this nine!

10th Par 4 324m Str 9
The large tree in the middle of the fairway has a nasty habit of attracting tee shots here! Try to keep left of the tree, as this presents an easier approach with a short iron to the narrow green. Probably best to keep the driver in the bag on this hole.

11th Par 5 507m Str 5
Again, keep the drive long and left on this tough par five. Beware of going for the green as the water on the left of the green is very much in play. The safe play is to lay up short of the fairway bunkers, leaving an easy approach into this very deep green. Take careful note of the pin placement as the green is nearly 50 metres front-to-back.

12th Par 3 173m Str 13
A fairly straightforward one-shotter, although the hole can be toughened, depending on the position of the flag.

13 Par 4 372m Str 7
The bunker on the right invites the longer hitter to have a go at clearing it, leaving a much shorter shot into the green on this dogleg right hole. For the shorter hitter, keep left, leaving a mid iron into the green.

14 Par 4 421m Str 1
No surprise that this is the toughest hole on the course. The drive needs to be long and straight – there is a large water hazard on the right – and then you’re faced with a long iron into the raised green. A four is a good score here – for the average player, it might be a good idea to play it as a par five!

15 Par 3 149m Str 17
Having survived the 14th, this par three will be a welcome relief, although there is water all around the back of the green, which can be intimidating. That intimidation will result in many tee shots landing short, but the green is fairly flat, so getting up and down for par is quite easy.

16 Par 4 390m Str3
Long and left is better here, but avoid the bunkers on the left. Tee shots that go too far right will leave the approach to the green blocked by trees, making par almost impossible. The large, sloping green can make two-putting tough too.

17 Par 5 475m Str 15
One of the easier par fives to reach in two as the landing area on the fairway is wide and generous. The green is guarded closely by water, making a short lay-up shot wise if you’re unsure.

18 Par 4 344m Str 11
A good finishing hole; the driving area is generous, which should leave no more than a short to mid iron into the green. Easy to make a par, but if a birdie is needed, there is plenty of trouble around the green that can make for a disappointing finish, so be careful!

The Links Golf Course

The Links Golf Course

The Links Golf Course

The Links golf course at the prestigious Fancourt Hotel & Country Estate is without doubt the most impressive course of golf design and construction ever in South Africa.  Fancout is located in George along South Africa's beautiful Garden Route.  Fancourt owner Dr Hasso Plattner, who took a very hands-on function in the creation, commissioned a golf course, which would not only be a thorough test for every golfer, but would also rank among the top golf courses in the world.

Gary Player’s design team spent months studying the classic links courses of Scotland and Ireland and then, armed with inspiration from the best that those countries had to offer, embarked on the ambitious task of recreating some of their finest holes to make a genuine links test on what was once an airfield.

The result is awe-inspiring and has elicited praise from some of the world’s finest golfers – The Links Golf Course in South Africa was the host venue for the 2003 Presidents Cup, which ended in an historic tie after a dramatic play-off between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els. In early 2005, it was the host venue for the Women’s World Cup of Golf, which was won by the diminutive duo of Rui Kitada and Ai Miyzato of Japan.  In December 2005 The Links hosted the SAA Open, the world’s second-oldest national Open Championship.

The Links golf course at the Fancourt Hotel & Spa is a private club, with play restricted to members and their invited guests. There are limited times available to guests staying at Fancourt’s hotel and bookings are essential.

There is little doubt that a round at The Links Golf Course is a special experience, enhanced greatly by the expert caddies at the club. These caddies are among the best in the world and are sure to assist any standard of golfer negotiate his or her way around The Links.  When playing The Links, it is difficult to believe that one is not in Scotland or Ireland, until, that is, one notices the imposing Outeniqua mountain range that rises impressively in the background.

Hole by Hole: The Links Golf Course

1st Par 4 362m Str 16 "On Ye Go"
A relatively gentle opener, the tee shot needs to favour the left side of the fairway to have a good view of the raised green. An extra club is advisable for the approach, but beware of being long and left, which will leave a tough return chip to the flag. You certainly do not want to be short – there is a deep pot bunker waiting to cause havoc early in the game.

2nd Par 3 216m Str 6 "Lang Drop"
A tough one-shotter that is exposed to the elements from the raised tee. Early in the round, it's advisable to aim for the middle of the green, rather than going after the flag, which can be tucked in any number of tough positions.

3rd Par 4 429 Str 2 "Calamity"
A long drive at the direction marker will help to make this hole just a little easier. The approach is over a stone-walled “burn” short of the green to a green that is fairly shallow from front to back. A four is an excellent score.

4th Par 4 452m Str 8 "Tranquility"
As it’s name suggests, this is the first opportunity to relax after a tough opening trio. Open the shoulders on the tee shot, which will leave a longish iron into the green.

5th Par 5 502m Str 18 "Wetland"
Although it is the stroke 18 hole, this is no pushover. The wetlands short of the green will gobble a miscued second going at the green, or a poorly executed third.

6th Par 4 312m Str 14 "Five Penny Piece"
A great risk-and-reward hole with a truly miniscule green, which will test your wedge play to the limits. Either lay up with an iron from the tee for a fairly full pitch, or for the longer hitter, have a go with the bunker, but expect to have an uphill chip to a very small target.

7th Par 4 435m Str 4 "Wide"
This hole certainly is wide, but left is best as it will leave a view to the hole. Anything on right of the fairway leaves a slightly shorter approach, but a totally blind one at that.

8th Par 3 185m Str 12 "Bonnie View"
A lovely par three, but beware of the water short and right of the green. Anything leaked will meet a watery end.

9th Par 5 557m Str 10 "Long"
Longer hitters can have a go at carrying the bunker on the left, depending on the prevailing wind. Anything to the right will make this “Long” hole substantially longer. Plenty of trouble at the green with another stone-walled “burn” to catch poor approaches to the green.

10th Par 4 373m Str 3 "Kilimanjaro"
Placement of the drive is more important than length off the tee as the approach to this substantially raised green must be from the fairway to have any chance of making par. Take enough club with the approach to reach the flag, otherwise you are left with a testing pitch up the hill.

11th Par 3 147m Str 17 "Valley"
A seemingly straightforward par three, there is a deep gully running through the centre of the green, which can make a two-putt very testing indeed.

12th Par 4 440m Str1 "Sheer Murrrder"
As its name suggests, this one is tough. A long drive is required, missing penal bunkers on the right. The undulating narrow green is guarded by a treacherous water hazard on the left. A par here will feel like a birdie!

13th Par 5 487m Str 13 "Outeniqua"
A very reachable par five, avoid the large fairway bunker on the left. If you have a spare moment, walk to the top of the dune on the right of the fairway. From there you will see flat farmland that will give a very good idea of what the land on which The Links was constructed originally looked like.

14th Par 4 330m Str 15 "Wee Wrecker"
This hole invites the brave and foolhardy to have a go at driving the green. The green and its entrance is extremely narrow, so the smart play is a fairway wood or long iron over the fairway bunker on the left, from where you are left with a fairly straightforward pitch to the flag.

15th Par 4 422m Str 5 "Roon the Bend"
The sensible play is at the direction marker with a fairway wood from the tee, but hugging the left and flirting with the water will leave a shorter approach. The green is protected by water on the left, so aim for the right half of the green.

16th Par 5 534m Str 7 "Westward Ho!"
Just left of the fairway bunker on the right is the ideal line on this long par five. The fairway narrows towards the green, with deep score-wrecking bunkers aplenty.

17th Par 3 172m Str 9 "Prayer"
Arguably one of the toughest par threes in the world, there is very little room for error here. The stone-walled burn that runs short and left of the green awaits anything slightly pulled, while playing “safe” to the right will result in a very tough chip shot.

18th Par 5 563m Str 11 "Near the Dram"
Although the tee is substantially lower than the fairway, the drive is really a lot more straightforward than it looks. The green is raised and relatively narrow from front to back, which makes hitting it in two a tough ask.

Knysna Golf Course

Knysna Golf Course

Knysna Golf Course, Garden Route (Western Cape, South Africa)

Along the Garden Route, about 500km from Cape Town and 250km from Port Elizabeth, Knysna is one of the Southern Cape Coast's best known holiday attractions.  The picturesque town of Knysna is  situated between lush forests and the shores of the peaceful lagoon.  Knysna offers many activities and attractions including the spectacular "Knysna Heads" which are the two great sandstone cliffs guarding the mouth of the lagoon which connects the Knysna estuary with the sea.

Nestled on the shores of the Knysna Lagoon and close to the looming Heads, the Knysna Golf Club's 18-hole golf course meanders through tidal pools and between magnificent indigenous trees.  The golf course feartures an interesting parkland layout which has been enhanced over the past ten years with bent grass greens. Although flat and easy to walk, the Knysna golf course provides players of all levels with a good challenge and is an affordable golfing experience not to be missed while touring the Garden Route region of South Africa.

The Clubhouse at the Knsyna golf course has a warm and inviting atmosphere and visitors are welcome to come and play a round of golf and enjoy the hospitality of our friendly staff and members.  The Knysna Golf Club was founded in 1909 and only moved to its present location in 1953. It started as a 9-hole course and was made an 18-hole course in1960. The course originally had bayview greens and very few bunkers until, in 1994, an extensive upgrade program was launched and 19 new Crenshaw bent grass greens were built.

Over the years, new tidal pools and channels have been introduced and real attention paid to the bunkering throughout the layout. That this has been successfully implemented can be seen from the clubhouse, for the eighteenth hole now has a superb bent grass surface covering a large undulating area.  Together with an attractive and potentially hazardous water feature as a backdrop, shapely and well manicured bunkers protecting the green add to what is now a substantial finishing challenge.

The Knysna golf course nevertheless remains an enjoyable and gentle stroll through tree-lined fairways and you will not experience the fatigue you might on the more testing courses in the region. The surrounding hills and mountains provide scenic backdrops and there is a great variety of trees, flowers and bird-life to watch out for. The newly rebuilt clubhouse has a pleasant halfway house with a welcoming bar and deck of substantial proportions.  The Knysna golf course measures 5,924 metres off the men's tees and 5,168 metres off the ladies' tees. It plays to a par of 73 with a South African Golf Union rating of 71.

Simola Golf Course

Simola Golf & Country Estate: Simola Hotel & Spa, Knsyna (Garden Route, South Africa)

The Simola Golf Course in Knysna along South Africa's magnificent Garden Route provides views around the course which are awe-enspiring.  The scenic Simola Country Estate takes its place as one of South Africa's premier golfing destinations.  The Simola golf course is the first Jack Nicklaus Signature course on South Africa's Garden Route, reflecting the maestro's philosophy of attuning the layout and design to the natural lie of the land.

The Simola golf course offers challenging and rewarding golf amidst spectacular scenery. Set below the high ridges, this unique golf course is free from the wind that so often plagues coastal courses. Fairways flow with the natural undulating contours of the terrain and the unusual configuration of five par 5's and five par 3's adds a new dimension to the game. It's par for the course that every hole boasts exceptional views either out across the Knysna Lagoon all the way to the Knysna Heads or over the picturesque Knysna River as it twists and turns through the valley below.

Jack Nicklaus: Simola Country Estate

The magnificence of the location inspired golfing legend Jack Nicklaus to design a masterpiece amidst the rolling hills of the Simola Estate.  Lauded as the greatest golfer in the history of the game, the 'Golden Bear' is also acknowledged as one of the world's leading golf course designers with more than 200 courses around the globe bearing his famous signature.  The Simola Golf Club proudly joins the ranks of this elite group of internationally recognised courses.

Clubhouse Facilities at the Simola Golf Course

The Simola Golf Clubhouse forms part of the Simola Hotel. Guests and members have access to hotel facilities such as the gourmet restaurant, the indoor swimming pool and the Wellness Centre.  The Simola Golf Clubhouse also offers spacious changing rooms, and the beautifully appointed lounge will comfort the needs of each of our prestigious members.  The Proshop features state-of-the-art golfing equipment, stylish apparel and a whole host of items to make your golf experience more enjoyable.

Simola Country Estate: Simola Hotel, Country Club and Spa

The development of Knysna's Simola Golf & Country Estate stems from an exciting joint venture between Kat Leisure, a hospitality group involved in developing and managing leisure industry properties, and the Osner Group, an Eastern Cape construction and property development company established in 1921.

Appreciative of the superlative natural beauty on the Simola Country Estate in South Africa, the developers, right from the beginning, envisaged only top class facilities to compliment the surroundings and add to the experience.

Late in 2002, the Osner Group, an Eastern Cape-based construction and property development company in partnership with the Kat Leisure hospitality group who develop and manage leisure industry properties, acquired 213 hectares of prime real estate high up in the hills above Knysna. The site inspired golf legend Jack Nicklaus to design a course, and Golf Data, South Africa's leading golf course construction and maintenance company, was contacted to create the Golden Bear's vision.

The Simola Golf & Country Estate emerged early 2005 as one of the most beautiful golf courses in South Africa with a residential estate offering exceptional investment value as well as a quality lifestyle opportunity.

Set above the beautiful town of Knysna, the five star Simola Hotel boasts spectacular views across the Knysna estuary, over emerald hills and the Knysna River, all the way to the famous Heads in the distance.  Away from the bustle, the Simola Hotel offers a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere.

Mossel Bay Golf Course

Mossel Bay Golf Course

Mossel Bay Golf Course, Mossel Bay (Garden Route, Western Cape in South Africa)

Famed for having a view of the magnificent Indian Ocean from every tee, this 18-hole links-style golf course, with its large undulating greens, makes for an idyllic yet challenging round of golf at South Africa's scenic Garden Route. The Mossel Bay golf club was founded in 1905 and the Mossel Bay golf course was relocated to its present position in 1924. A round of golf at Mossel Bay Golf Club is the perfect start to a golfing trip along the coastal areas of the Garden Route.

On Course: Mossel Bay Golf Course

The Mossel Bay golf course is an easy walk and very playable from tee to green for all golfers. The beautiful views of the Indian Ocean or the Springbuck roaming on the golf course might distract you, but they will most definitely leave you with lasting memories.

The Mossel Bay golf course signature hole is the 17th hole, which is a par 5. At 494m and stroke 2, this can be challenging especially when playing into the sea breeze. The tee is situated high above the fairway with magnificent vistas over the estate, and the hole runs downhill towards the green with the Indian Ocean as your backdrop.

Well-placed bunkers on the side of the fairway will catch any errand tee shots. The green is a large, three level, undulating green, which makes a par 5 on the hole uncertain, should you find the green with your approach shot.

Oudtshoorn being the closest town to the famous Congo Caves is a very popular tourist attraction and the golf course proves an excellent diversion for the keen golfer.  The Oudtshoorn Golf Club was established to the west of the town in 1922 and then relocated to its present position in 1957. It's a well-established 18-hole layout that is surprisingly lush and in great condition. Although Oudtshoorn is only sixty kilometers away from George, Garden Route, it is drier and warmer and makes an attractive and different stop for touring golfers - especially in a wet coastal winter.

Surrounded by natural beauty, Oudtshoorn is situated at the foot of the majestic Swartberg Mountain range. Numerous rivers, streams and falls have their origins in the Swartberg, Outeniqua and Kamanassie ranges around the town.  Waterfalls abound, and visitors can safely visit two spectacular examples at Rus en Vrede and at Meiringspoort - a narrow, vertical cleft in the Swartberg Mountain, with the road through crossing the Meiring's River no less than 32 times.

The Plettenberg Bay Country Club features an 18 hole parklands golf course which nestles in a private nature reserve. This highly rated golf course in South Africa is a very popular tourist destination. The Plettenberg golf course is easy to walk, and the 2 main inclines can be observed from the veranda.

Lush Kikuyu grass fairways and bayview greens recently over seeded to bent grass provides golfers with an excellent playing surface on this park like golf course. Despite intense competition from the beautiful white beaches and rolling surf, the club is busy and booking is essential.

This is no 'little seaside golf course', all greens and bunkers are to USGA specifications. All greens and fairways are on automatic sprinkler systems – the result is a golf course you will remember.  The Parkland Course has no intrusive houses or traffic noise and is populated mainly with indigenous flora and fauna.  The natural beauty of the course has been carefully retained.
