Durbanville Golf Club

Durbanville Golf Club

Durbanville Golf Club, Cape Town (South Africa)

The Durbanville Golf Club began in 1971 on a course with very little grass, clay soil, a gravel car-park and no clubhouse. The course and the Club had been conceived by local amateur enthusiasts and approved by the community at a meeting at the Town Hall. The original layout was designed by Ken Elkin.

The Durbanville Golf Club has come a long way since those early days.  The Durbanville Golf Club is located in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, just a 30 km drive or 25 minutes from Cape Town on the N1 freeway.

There are no steep hills to climb, nor thick jungle to swallow your golf ball.  At the Durbanville Golf Club, you will find open space with beautiful fairways, bent grass greens the equal of any others, a course in immaculate condition. All in all, a wonderful setting for a game of golf with a view across the course to the distant mountains from the lounge bar, where you may enjoy your drink after the game.

The  Durbanville Golf Club in Cape Town offers a special welcome to all visitors and has built up a reputation as one of the friendliest clubs around. The halfway house and catering facility offers freshly prepared snack style food combining quality and value for money.  An outside seating area under thatched gazebos offers the opportunity to enjoy cool refreshing drinks and appreciate the surroundings.  The well- stocked pro-shop is run by friendly staff and has golf cars, carts and clubs for hire.

Hole by hole description: Durbanville Golf Course, Cape Town (South Africa)

Hole 1 Par 4 Stroke 4 - 361 meters
A friendly start down a generous level fairway with a bunker on the right. A large green awaits a good long second shot.

Hole 2 Par 4 Stroke 16 - 288 meters
A great little par four, which dog legs to the right. Follow the narrow fairway and have a short iron into the green on the line of the clubhouse in the distance.

Hole 3 Par 4 Stroke 2 - 393 meters
A long par four slightly downhill with lovely vistas of distant farmland and hills. You'll be hitting long shots to the green through the narrow bush lined opening in the fairway and if you make par, you will be happy.

Hole 4 Par 3 Stroke 14 - 157 meters
Another good par three mainly into the wind. Bunkers around the green. Deceptive slope on the green makes putting the key here.

Hole 5 Par 5 Stroke 18 - 447 meters
A chance for a birdie on this slight uphill par five played with the wind. Trees and bush border the fairway but only wide enough to catch the very wild hooks or slices. Precise putting required on the sloping green.

Hole 6 Par 5 Stroke 10 - 465 meters
A road borders this hole on the left. So do not hook! - there is plenty of room on the right. The fairway is straight with a gentle downslope. The green is bunkered on both sides.

Hole 7 Par 3 Stroke 8 - 160 meters
A testing short hole especially into the prevailing summer south-easter wind. No trees or bushes to worry about but bunkers await. The putting surfaces on these greens are fast and smooth.

Hole 8 Par 4 Stroke 12 - 322 meters
A straightforward par four where you can open your shoulders with the driver as there is a wide area to aim at. A mid iron shot to a well bunkered green.

Hole 9 Par 4 Stroke 6 - 321 meters
Though the same length as the previous hole, the ninth has a more intimidating feel about it.The tee shot will find you on a gently uphill fairway to the Club House. Your iron shot to the green is a challenge as you cannot see the front bunker nor the fast, sloping putting surface.

Hole 10 Par 4 Stroke 3 - 333 meters
A testing start to the second nine holes. A tight dog-leg right which, if you push your tee shot, will find you in the trees. A mid-iron second to a raised green. A good golf hole.

Hole 11 Par 5 Stroke 7 - 459 meters
A straight par five into the summer wind. Scattered trees line the fairway and the views from this top side of the course are superb. The raised green overlooks the dam.

Hole 12 Par 3 Stroke 11 - 180 meters
An excellent short hole over the side of the lake. This is a beautiful corner of the course with abundant bird life amongst the reed beds

Hole 13 Par 4 Stroke 17 - 300 meters
A short walk along the wall of the dam takes you to the thirteenth tee, set high up above the course where you'll want to stop a while to admire the spectacular view of the distant Club house and surrounding mountains. A short par four through an avenue of trees with a pitch shot to a spacious green. A chance for a birdie!

Hole 14 Par 4 Stroke 5 - 336 meters
The "Pulpit" hole - famous in Cape golfing circles. Your second shot has to reach the top of the fairway embankment with the green high above. Don't be short or your ball may roll 50 meters back towards you.

Hole 15 Par 5 Stroke 15 - 473 meters
The lower half of the course is laid out before you from this tee and you feel you could hit the ball forever. A gentle downhill par five bordered by some quality houses on the right.

Hole 16 Par 4 Stroke 1 - 402 meters
The toughest hole on the course, long and slightly uphill requires two very good hits to reach the green. There is plenty of space either side of the fairway, so open your shoulders.

Hole 17 Par 3 Stroke 13 - 196 meters
A long and deceptive short hole which requires a wood for many handicap golfers. The green is and inviting target, as it is below the level of the tee.

Hole 18 Par 4 Stroke 9 - 344 meters
Similar to the ninth hole, a gentle up slope back to the Club house. A fairway bunker on the right may catch a long drive with the wind. A challenging shot to the green must avoid the three well placed bunkers. A very fast sloping green.

King David Golf Club

King David Golf Club

King David Golf Course, Cape Town (Western Cape, South Africa)

Founded in 1956, the King David Golf Course in Cape Town has long had a reputation as one of the best layouts in South Africa.  Designed by Bob Grimsdell, the King David golf course is a gently rolling parkland  course with each hole illustrating its own unique character and challenging all aspects of ones game.

Over the years the course has been altered only ever so slightly which is a testament to the quality of Bob Grimsdell's original design.  With the installation of a state of the art reticullation system, the King David golf course has been given the chance to fulfill its huge potential.

Facilities: King David Golf Course

This championship 18 hole golf course is complimented  by superb practice facilities. A wonderful practice range that can accommodate 50 players allows players to test all their skills whether they are pitching to the target greens or unleashing a driver. King David boasts two putting greens as well as a bunkered short game area making the club a firm favourite with Tour pros looking to sharpen their game.

Hole by Hole: King David Golf Course, Cape Town

Hole 1
A good solid par 5 to open. At 546 metres it is no push over as an opening hole and should be played as a three shotter.Your tee shot needs to be threaded between the left hand fairway trap and the grassy mound on the right.  Follow this with a good fairway wood should leave you in the dip about 80 metres short of the green. A good pitch to the well bunkered green should have your round off to a good start.

Hole 2
A fantastic par 3 nestled between the trees. A mid-iron aimed at the heart of the green is recommended. Treat the over hanging trees with respect especially when playing from the championship tees.

Hole 3
Stroke 1 on the course this can be a man sized par 4 especially on a windy day. A drive favouring the right hand side of the fairway affords you a better angle  to approach the green from. A long narrow green  with two large bunkers either side , a par here is always a great score.

Hole 4
A shortish par 5 but a classic risk and reward hole. A dogleg right around the mature gum trees this hole is best played conservatively up the left side. However for the “heroes” out there why not try a long tee shot up the right side which will shorten the hole considerably. After a good drive you will still have to negotiate the large tree over hanging the fairway 60 metres short of the green. You have been warned-do not miss the fairway right.

Hole 5
A picturesque par 3 played with a mid iron to a green protected by both sand and grass bunkers.

Hole 6
On a beautiful day there isn´t a finer hole. A par 4 played from a raised tee to a green  with Table Mountain as the back drop. A very generous driving area that can certainly be elusive when the prevailing wind  blows. Don´t let the majestic scenery distract you.R32;

Hole 7
A long par 4 gently doglegging to the left. Keep your drive up the right to afford yourself a better approach to the green which is obscured somewhat by the mound on the left.

Hole 8
Bob Grimsdell at his finest. A rolling par 5 that demands accuracy and length all the way.  A good straigth drive followed by an accurate fairway wood  next to the water hazard leaves you with only a short iron or pitch to a large inviting green. The conservative play is to hit your second shot further right away from the water hazard but this will leave you with a blind third shot.

Hole 9
A short par 4 but one requiring an accurate tee shot  through the avenue of trees. The practice range awaits on the right hand side for anyone that slices their tee shot. A good chance to pick up a birdie.

Hole 10
Generally played into the teeth of the wind , a great par 4 that demands length off the tee and  an accurate approach to a smallish green. Bunkered left and right leaving your approach just short affords you a simple chip and putt or two putt par.

Hole 11
Choose your club on the tee wisely. A dogleg left  dominated by huge trees up the left. Strategically placed bushes up the right hand side will catch any drive that is sliced. Played to a large raised green the pin position here very important. Never be tempted to aim for the flag if the pin is tucked behind the ride hand bunker.

Hole 12
A par 3 rated by none other than Gary Player as “one of the finest”. Played to a raised  well bunkered green this hole often requires a full blooded fairway wood to reach the putting surface. Take a par and run.

Hole 13
Out of bounds all the way up the left side this is not a long par 4. A nice tee shot up the right hand side just short of the cross bunkers will allow  you to  attack the flag. Beware the bunker short left of the green.

Hole 14
A short par 5 dogleg right to a generous fairway, but don´t count your chickens too quickly. The  large trees and bunkers surrounding the green have spoiled many a fine round. It should be an easy par but show it plenty of respect.

Hole 15
A short but treacherous par 3. A short iron to the middle of this well bunkered green is all you require. This green will reject all but the finest approach shots.

Hole 16
A blind tee shot that should favour the right side on this dogleg left par 4. Not  a long hole but one that severely punishes a mis-cued drive.

Hole 17
A throw back from a by gone era. A dogleg right par 4 that requires a fairway wood to the crest of the hill. Make sure not to be fooled into under-clubbing on your second shot as the ball will roll off the front of the green and down the hill. This leaves a very tricky chip shot. Not very inviting.

Hole 18
A treacherous par 4 that has decided many a match. Played back towards the clubhouse with Table Mountain visible in the distance this hole is fraught with danger. Off the tee beware of the trees over hanging on the right. As you approach the green take note of the water hazard on the right of the green. Make a par here and not only will you feel as though you have conquered the last hole you will also  definitely have earned a trip to the “19th” hole.

Mowbray Golf Course

Mowbray Golf Course

Mowbray Golf Course, Cape Town (Western Cape, South Africa)

The Mowbray Golf Club is recognized as being one of the best in South Africa with all major amateur championships having been played there. Mowbray has hosted the SA Open seven times and the Bells Cup three times.  Set at the foot of Table Mountain, the Mowbray Golf Club is renowned for its breathtaking views, lush fairways and immaculate greens.

There are a variety and abundance of birdlife clusters around the water features. Experience the pleasure of teeing off down newly mown fairways, bordered by tall pines and indigenous trees.  Mowbray invites you to join us in a memorable game of golf on our championship course; thereafter relax with friends as you look out onto the 18th from one of our comfortable lounges.

Set in a very central area about 15 minutes from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and in close proximity to the Cape Town International Airport, the Mowbray golf course is a parkland course, which provides an excellent test of golf. The terrain is flat, but plenty of trees and water features make for an interesting experience, with the beauty of the mountain and abundant wild life dominating the scenery.

A significant feature of any coastal golf course is the wind. This is where Mowbray is unique, in that the holes have been so laid out that you will seldom find yourself with the wind directly in your face or right at your back. Also, believe it or not, the wind in Mowbray / Pinelands is seldom as severe as in other parts of the Cape peninsula.

Both fairways and greens remain soft throughout the year on the Mowbray Golf Course. The fairways consist predominantly of kikuyu grass while the greens are paspalum which provide an excellent putting surface. Experiments with pure bent grass have not been successful, so the indigenous grass family variety is now being "managed", with more than satisfactory results.

While the course is not particularly long, the golfer will find Mowbray a real challenge. It is generally accepted that the S A Golf Union ratings of 71 from the back tees and 69 from the front make it about 2 or 3 strokes more difficult than average. Don't let this put you off, however. If you hit the ball straight, you'll do well and even if you go off line here and there, the rough is very forgiving and is kept well trimmed.

Royal Cape Golf Course

Royal Cape Golf Course, Cape Town (South Africa)

With lovely views of Table Mountain from most holes, the Royal Cape Golf Course in Cape Town's Southern suburbs, which is a championship course, offers a beautiful setting that will make your visit here truly memorable.

Royal Cape Golf Club is a true championship course having hosted the South African Open no less than ten times and the SA Amateur Championships eight times. The most recent SA Open held here was in 1996 and was won by Ernie Els.

Extensive work was done on the greens in 2000 to bring them up to the USGA standards and the course today is a fine test of golf and worthy of its championship rating. Essentially it is a very flat parkland course, well maintained and a pleasure to play with lovely views of the surrounding mountains.  The fairways of the Royal Cape Golf Course are narrow, demanding extreme accuracy off the tee, wayward shots can be heavily penalized amongst the trees and the greens are well bunkered.

There is also plenty of water on the course, notably at the corner of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and also the 14th, 15th and 16th. The 4th and 15th are beautiful par-3's, the 15th in particular requiring a finely judged shot over the water which encroaches right up to the edge of the green. The most difficult holes are the par-4 3rd, at 435m the longest two-shotter on the course, and the par-4 14th, a dog-leg right played into the teeth of the prevailing south-easter and with water guarding the right front and side of the green.
