Introducing Aus

After the Germans surrendered to the South African forces at Otavi on 9 July 1915, the small and tranquil village of Aus in Namibia became one of two internment camps for the German military. Military police and officers were sent to a camp in the north and the noncommissioned officers went to Aus.

After the treaty of Versailles, the camp was dismantled and by May 1919 it was closed. Virtually nothing remains of the original camp, but several World War I graves remain immediately north of Aus.  On the way to Lüderitz, visitors can  observe the feral desert horses of the Namib.  These can best be seen by the hide at Garub Pan which is located 20 km west of Aus.
