This park was established in 1931 as a sanctuary for the eastern Cape’s last surviving elephants. The population has grown steadily and now is home to over 400 elephants. Black rhino was introduced in 1962, other mammals include eland, red hartebeest and Cape buffalo, also a  variety of antelope. Recently 6 lions were introduced.

Several historic sites can be found in the area of the Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa which dates back as far as 1829. The most well known site is the Drift House, the Inn used by most people crossing the Addo drift from the old Cape Colony into the Hinterland.

Game Drives - Addo Elephant National Park

Visitors at the Addo Elephant Nationak Park can enjoy game viewing from their own vehicle to explore the 75 kilometres of road through prime wildlife country in South Africa. Several lookout points at waterholes can be found in the area.

As an alternative to self driving, visitors may participate in the guided game drives in open vehicles by day, at sunset or by night, which is the time when the Buffalo and black Rhino are most often spotted.

Addo Elephant Park's experienced guides take visitors on a walking trail in the heart of the Elephant country. Or, one can take part in the Rhino trekking Excursions.
- Discovery Trail:
This unique 2km hiking trail through typical Addo thicket has been specially designed for disabled visitors and is suitable for people on wheelchairs.
- Zuurberg Nature Trails (1 hour and 4 hours):
The area, winding through fynbos and deep kloofs of unspoiled indigenous forest and boastingimpressive Cycad populations, is home to Leopard, Bushpig and a wide variety of Birdlife.
- Alexandria Hiking Trail:
The Alexandria Hiking Trail offers hikers three different environments, a rare feature that can only be found on this Trail: Forests, Coastal Dunes and Sea Shore. It is a two-day trail that starts from the Woody Cape section of the Park, Langebos and extends up to 19.5 km on the first day and 16.5 km on the second.  This is an exciting Adventure which takes visitors through coastal forests swarming with Birdlife, as one moves towards the coast, where one can stop to watch the Dolphins and Whales from the cliffs of Woody Cape. You will have an overnight stop here before you set out on yet another adventure, on the
coastal dunefield that extends from the Sundays River Mouth.

Horse Trails - Addo Elephant National Park

Experienced riders can enjoy a three hour guided horse Trail that is within the Elephant area, while novice riders can partake in a two hour guided horse Trail next to the game fence. There is also a 1 hour trail for novice riders and 3 and 5-hour trails for experienced riders in the Zuurberg Mountain Horse Trails.
