Durban Botanic Gardens The Durban Botanic Gardens are located near the Greyville racecourse. It was built in 1849 as an experimental station for tropical crops. The spectacular cycad and palm collection on the 15 ha property is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Several species such as Encephalartos woodii from the Ngoye forest, can be found. Among the Durban’s Botanic Gardens are the oldest jacaranda trees in South Africa which were originally imported from Argentinia. Other attractions at the Botanic Gardens in Durban are the sunken garden, a herbarium, an ornamental lake and a tea garden.
Waterworld in Durban, KwaZulu Natal The Waterworld in Durban is a theme park based on having fun in the water. Given Durban’s hot and humid weather, Waterworld is a very popular destination. It offers thrilling water slides, cool wave pools and water chutes in a tropical setting framed by palm trees.
Umgeni River Bird Park, KwaZulu Natal Umgeni River Bird Park enjoys a beautiful location as it is bordered by steep cliffs and overlooking the north bank of the Umgeni River, 1.5 km from its mouth. Waterfalls cascade down the cliffs into ponds fringed by palms and lush vegetation. Walk through aviaries allow visitors a face-to-face with some 3000 birds. Among the 400 resident bird species are rare exotic parrots, toucans, cranes, macaws and hornbills.
Temple of Understanding in Durban The Temple of Understanding in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, was designed by the Austrian architect Hannes Raudner.
