The 1950s was a decade of defiance and bravery in South Africa. A time when the people of South Africa who were being prejudiced against, stood up and vowed to fight the fight for a better future. It was during this decade that the Freedom Charter was written, which still forms the foundation upon which the African National Congress was built.

The Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Soweto, Johannesburg, was where South Africa's Freedom Charter was signed and it is this historic location which now defines the place of the Soweto Hotel on Freedom Square. The hotel on Freedom Square is the first four-star hotel in Soweto, Johannesburg.

The unique Soweto Hotel on Freedom Square pays tribute to the heroes and heroines of the freedom struggle. Each room at the hotel features a different aspect of the struggle. The conference venues and suites are each named and decorated in respect of one of the big actors during this era. The entire hotel is decorated with strong photography and images. The pictures were taken by the famous local photographer Alf Khumalo and present the fight to bring about change in South Africa. The hotel strives to offer the same warmth, generosity and natural hospitality that one would experience in any South African home. In light of the Freedom Charter, this hotel has written its own Hotel Charter.

We absolutely loved our time at The Soweto Hotel on Freedom Square. We thought we understood everything there was to know about the Apartheid struggle, but we learnt so much just from the information in our room!!!
Meals at Jazz Maniacs were absolutely fantastic and the talent they showcase to perform are mindblowing.
It was so nice to learn about Southa Africa's past without having the negativity but rather the positivity that came from it.
We will definitely go back next time we are in Joburg.
