Milkwood Suite
Kotchka Vladykin had a love for the beautiful milkwood trees that are endemic to the area and may not be cut down without a permit. The giant one which stands ever-watchful over the property, protectively wraps its branches around the former main bedroom sheltering it from the tropical heat.
This suite, with its breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, is unashamedly the perfect backdrop for romance. Reminiscent of a modern day beach cottage it is sophisticated and uncluttered, yet at all times soft and inviting.
The overall dominating feature is the lime-washed four-poster bed wrapped in billowing organza, ribbons and crystals which add to its feeling of wonder. An unusual feature is the very high dark stained timber ceiling with a clerestory window which is softened by sweeping linen drapes.

Juliet Suite
The Juliet balconies inspired the décor for this ethereal suite and it is easy to imagine the two star-struck lovers taking refuge here. Perched on the uppermost floor, there is always a gentle sea breeze whispering through the trees, creating a mood which harks back to a bygone era.
A modern version of toile and a large draped headboard set the tone for this room in evocative shades of gold, copper and mink. Layered and layered again, then embellished with organzas which are offest against a brilliant white backdrop.
A separate bathroom is swathed in white only with the white ceiling contrasting against a golden beech wood floor which originally graced the dining room. This loft area boasts panoramic views of the ocean and these are best taken in from the freestanding bath with a glass of bubbly in hand.

Durban View
There are commanding views all the way to Durban and the Bluff, where the city’s whaling station was formerly based. Now, it’s the sleek and playful dolphins which can often be spotted riding the waves. The contrast of the blue ocean with our African heritage creates a unique and contemporary space. This suite encapsulates the juxtaposition of African Zen – it has the feeling of Africa without the roughness.
The richness of the continent’s palette was toned down and made subtle and sophisticated by placing the suite in context within its exterior environment, the wondrous blue sea. A mirror theme is carried through the room, and the reflection of the view through the large windows is captured in numerous strategically positioned antique bevelled mirrors. This is a sanctuary for those who prefer to shrug off clutter and, instead, embrace comfort and elegance in complete privacy.

Palm Suite
The intrepid explorers of Africa left an indelible legacy and this region is extremely proud of its colonial legacy. They were followed by the colourful Indian immigrants and their contribution has been enormous. Fusing elements from these two aspects pays homage to Umhlanga’s unique heritage.
Subtle shades of putty, olive and green dominate this room providing a hideaway of cool seclusion and relaxation for the weary. Spectacular use of an antique document printed on linen, depicting the taming of the tiger in India, is the exotic axis around which this suite revolves. A hand-embroidered throw on the bed hints at the incredible craftsmanship found in both India and Africa and natural bamboo wallpaper in the bath alcove takes you a step closer to nature.

Vladykin Suite
Kotchka Vladykin, born in Russia, escaped the revolution as a young boy with the aid of the Red Cross. Joining his mother in England, he qualified as a mining surveyor which brought him to South Africa. This is a tribute to the Russian legacy of the man who built Teremok.
Heirlooms, brocade and embroidered velvet in beautiful deep jewel colours hint of the Russian empire in its heyday. Plush individual detailing is a highlight and, as Kotcha loved nudes and had one commissioned of his wife, tribute was paid to him with a sensual painting that demarcates the transition from bedroom to bathroom. The feel of the suite gives an idea of what it might have been like to experience the romance of a gypsy life … or a Russian in exile.

Kotcha’s daughter Nadya married Harvey Douglas in 1959 and, while on honeymoon, was asked by her father find a piece of land that would be suitable for a family beach cottage. This suite pays tribute to other side of Teremok’s colourful history.
Marilyn Monroe or James Dean might have languished here. It is drenched in minty green which gives zest to the suite, while the freshness of white is starkly contrasted against the dark shades of brown. The large open plan suite with its white ostrich skin headboard is a modern interpretation of a classical idea. Stunted succulents in rich teal ceramic containers guard the bathroom along with a photo of Marilyn.
Cushions and other objet in contrasting aquas and browns provide a freshness and set the scene of a hideaway which would not be out of place in Manhattan or Hollywood.
