Overview

Activities
Spier was established in 1692, and as such has a colourful history. The Heritage Walk combines a beautiful stroll through nature with some interesting facts about Spier's heritage. This includes the wine farm’s cultural history, such as the 1822 Manor House and South Africa's oldest dated wine cellar.
There are also some interesting facts about Spier’s natural and social heritage and information on some of our related projects. One example is the wastewater treatment plant which combines nature, art and technology, creating a space of cleansing and healing for one of the most precious resources.
The walk is circular, free of charge, and meanders through Spier's magnificent protea garden and the avenue of indigenous coral trees. For the more adventurous, there are two callout points which add about 1 hour onto the walk. The walk is approx 1.5 hours but guests have the choice to end at any time.
Almost 300 hectares of the Spier farm is being managed under biodynamic agricultural practices. Pasture-reared beef and chicken, pastured eggs, some wine grapes and vegetables are the currently in production, with provision being made for olives, artichokes, nectarines and almond trees.
Biodynamic techniques recognise that plant life is intimately connected to the life of the soil—that the soil itself is alive and vital, and the degree of vitality has a direct bearing on the health of the crops, which in turn brings health to those who consume the produce. Biodynamics therefore works to improve the fertility of the soil using a closed-loop approach.
In addition to sharing principles, methods and techniques with organic farming, biodynamic agriculture acknowledges that the plant’s growth is also affected by planetary influences like the waxing and the waning of the moon and other forces in nature.

Visitors to Spier can engage with the cheetahs at their facility on the estate.
