Rustenburg, North West Province in South Africa

Located on the N4, just an hour's drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria, Rustenburg is paradoxically the gateway to the bright lights of Sun City, where visitors can attend live cabaret extravaganzas, throw dice in glitzy casinos and enjoy abundant fun-filled recreation.

Rustenburg is situated on the edge of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, one of the most heavily mineralised areas in the world. This is why two of the world’s largest platinum mines lie just outside Rustenburg, earning it the nickname ‘Platinum City’.

The city of Rustenburg in South Africa is one of the oldest towns in this part of the world – lying adjacent to Phokeng, and surrounded by the Magaliesberg mountain range. The temperature is typically four degrees warmer than temperate Gauteng, it is at altitude and it is malaria free.

The history of Rustenburg is closely linked to that of the Voortrekkers who founded the town in 1851 on the farm Buffelsfontein. Initially belonging to Casper Kruger, the father of Paul Kruger, it was used as a frontier post and a resort for hunters, explorers and prospectors. Later the town was the seat of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, before Pretoria took that honour. Today Rustenburg and Phokeng in South Africa’s North West Province are home to a population of approximately 1 000 000 inhabitants.

I stayed at the Royal Marang Hotel to attend a scientific workshop. The hotel is amazing. A great combination of laid back and posh. The latte machines in the room are a wonderful touch - given that it is hard to find a espresso in South Africa (caveat: from USA, used to ubiquitous coffee shops). The turn down service was excellent and the accommodations are second to none. Couldn't recommend higher.
