Rovos Rail Golf Safari Journey Overview

The impressive Rovos Rail journey commences in Pretoria and travels to the dramatic Drakensberg escarpment en route to Nelspruit. 

A charming nine-day Golfing Safari to entertain the most avid golfer. At all locations, there are voluntary trips for the entertainment of non-playing guests.

This panoramic Rovos nine-day sojourn commences at the Rovos Rail Station at Capital Park in Pretoria. The first leg of the journey takes the train through Witbank and Middleburg and then traverses the majestic Drakensberg escarpment en route to the Lowveld of Mpumalanga.

Tee off at the Royal Swazi Golf Club, Manzini, Swaziland, while non-golfers visit the Ngwenya Glass Factory, lunch at Guava Galleries followed by a safari drive in the Mkhaya Game Reserve. Then it's on to Zululand for wildlife viewing in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

The following morning you will receive an early wake-up call to then either tee-off at Leopard Creek Golf Course or enjoy an early morning safari drive in the Kruger Park. The train will take the non-golfing guests south towards Mpaka in Swaziland where they will be joined by the golfers for an afternoon safari drive in the Mkhaya Reserve.

The Pride of Africa departs mid-morning and makes its way south through the lush cane fields of KwaZulu Natal, arriving in Empangeni after brunch where the golfers will disembark for 18 holes at the Zimbali Country Club. The notion golfing guests continue on the train for a late afternoon arrival in Durban where they will be joined by the golfers for an evening in the city.

A scenic drive follows an early morning tee-off at Durban Country Beachwood Club for the golf enthusiasts through Pietermaritzburg and The Valley of a Thousand Hills en route to Lions River to join the train.

The train meanwhile stops at Lions River for a morning visit to the famous Ardmore Ceramics Gallery. Lunch and an afternoon of leisure are enjoyed by all as the route to Bethlehem take the train past Lesotho and the highest mountains in the Drakensberg range at 3 482 metres.

Day 1:

  • Depart Rovos Rail Station in Capital Park, Pretoria.
  • Guests may freshen up in their suites before meeting fellow passengers in the lounge car or rear observation car.
  • Lunch is served in the dining cars. Tea in the lounge and observation cars. Dinner en route to Rustenburg. 

Day 2:

  • GOLFERS GARY PLAYER/LOST CITY 
  • Transfer to Sun City. Game drive in Pilanesberg Reserve. Lunch with the golfers. Afternoon at leisure at Lost City’s Sun City.
  • Return to the train. Dinner is served. Dress: Formal 06:00 17:30 20:00 Breakfast is served until departure. Transfer (60 minutes) to Sun City’s Gary Player/ Lost City Golf Course for tee off and lunch.
  • Enjoy an afternoon of golfing and leisure.

Day 3:

  • GOLFERS All Guests AT LEISURE Day at leisure on the train.

Day 4:

  • GOLFERS CHAMPAGNE SPORTS
  • Transfer (60 minutes) to Spionkop Lodge for a battlefields tour and light refreshments before moving to Spionkop hill to finish this historic story. Return to the lodge for lunch.
  • Afternoon game drives OR relaxes at the lodge. Return to the train. 
  • Transfer (45 minutes) to Champagne Sports Resort for tee off and lunch.

Day 5:

  • GOLFERS DURBAN/BEACHWOOD/ZIMBALI 
  • Disembark for a Durban city tour, a visit to the botanical gardens and lunch. Afternoon at leisure OR return to the train. Return to the train. The train departs Durban. Tea in the lounge and observation cars. Dinner en route to Hluhluwe.
  • Transfer to Durban Country Club/Durban Beachwood/Zimbali for tee off and lunch. Return to the train. The train departs Durban. Tea in the lounge and observation cars. Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Hluhluwe.

Day 6:

  • GOLFERS All Guests HLUHLUWE
  • Transfer to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi. Boardgame vehicles for a game drive. Tea break at Hilltop Camp. Return to the train. Lunch is served in the dining cars en route to Golela for border formalities with Swaziland. Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car at the rear of the train. Dinner is served en route to Mpaka.
  • Continental breakfast is served until departure. Transfer to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi. Boardgame vehicles for a game drive. Tea break at Hilltop Camp. Return to the train. Lunch is served in the dining cars en route to Golela for border formalities with Swaziland. Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car at the rear of the train. Dinner is served en route to Mpaka.

Day 7:

  • GOLFERS ROYAL SWAZI SUN
  • Transfer to Mkhaya Reserve. Boardgame vehicles for a game drive.
  • Transfer (75 minutes) to Swazi Candles. Lunch and craft/curio shopping. Transfer (15 minutes) to Royal Swazi to join the golfers OR return to the train (75 minutes).
  • Tea is served in the lounge and observation car. Depart for Komatipoort, South Africa. Dinner is served in the dining cars.
  • Transfer (90 minutes) to Royal Swazi Sun for tee off and lunch. Return to the train. Depart for Komatipoort, South Africa. Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Malelane. Dress: Formal LEISURE GUESTS KRUGER PARK

Day 8:

  • GOLFERS LEOPARD CREEK/WHITE RIVER/NELSPRUIT
  • Please ensure you have your passport for the Kruger National Park entrance formalities.
  • Breakfast is served until departure. Boardgame vehicles for a game drive in the Kruger National Park with a tea break en route. Lunch with an opportunity for curio shopping. Return to the train. Tea in the lounge and observation cars. Dinner is served. Dress: “1920s” Theme/Smart Casual 06:00 15:30 16:30 19:30
  • Breakfast is served until departure. Transfer to Leopard Creek (15 minutes) OR White River Country Club (75 minutes) OR Nelspruit for tee off and lunch. Return to the train.
