Located against the Klein Dassenberg mountains in the Cape Winelands, South Africa one can find the quaint Mont Rochelle Boutique Wine Cellar, with its unique character and layout due to its historic origin. Previously a fruit packing shed, the Mont Rochelle Wine Cellar in Franschhoek dates back 150 years.
The Mont Rochelle vineyards were first planted in 1994. In 2001 Miko Rwayitare bought the farm and became the first black African to own a wine farm in South Africa.
Mont Rochelle Mountain Vineyards is a farm where 16 of the 33 ha is under vine and boasts sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, merlot, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. Included are small blocks of mouvedre, petit verdot, viognier and the newly grafted semillon.
The Mont Rochelle Vineyards are situated from 250m to 400m above sea level, which gives a wide range of micro climates. Mediterranean-like conditions found in the Western Cape of South Africa means dry summers and high winter rainfalls of 1000mm. The Franschhoek valley also experiences the south-easter which also helps bring in cooler air allowing for a longer ripening period, lending a hand to more physiologically ripe fruit.
Guests are welcome to visit the Mont Rochelle tasting centre any day of the week. The friendly staff is happy to introduce visitors to the wines and will answer all questions about the wine making process.

White Wines at Mont Rochelle
Reserve Sauvignon Blanc
Made in a classic crisp fresh style, and usually portrays clean herbaceous and tropical fruit aromas, aged on lees for pallet weight and length.
Unwooded Chardonnay
Produced to accentuate the true fruit character of the chardonnay grape. Shows clean fruit characters that include cling peach and apricots, lees aged once again for pallet weight.
Rosé
Rosé is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. Rose is made to enjoy for all occasions, can be enjoyed ice cold on the country kitchen terrace or simply take home and enjoy with family and friends.
Barrel fermented Chardonnay
Intense golden lime colour, sets precedence for clean citrus, and bruised apple and pear aromas, neatly held together by butterscotch and mineral undertones. The palate conjures up thoughts of intensive citrus and stone fruits, whilst also portraying clean acidity and minerality.
Miko Chardonnay sur lie
Produced in honour of the late Mr. Miko Rwayitare. Barrel fermented chardonnay was always a favourite of his. Only the best quality grapes and barrels are used in its production.
Red Wines at Mont Rochelle
Merlot
Mont Rochelle makes their merlot to match foods, therefore guests will usually pick a good pallet structure and tannin integration. Usually shows plummy red fruits with deep concentration.
Cabernet Sauvignon
A wine for the serious red wine drinker; full bodied and rich in flavour. This block of cab provides stunning wines year in and year out.
Syrah
The Mont Rochelle syrah is the flagship red wine. It is made in a more traditional style hence ‘syrah’. Fine grained tannins backed by succulent red fruits and spice.
Artemis
This is the answer to cape blends, comprising of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, pinotage, and shiraz. Made to be an easy drinking soft and hearty wine, to be enjoyed with food or friends alike.
Miko Cabernet Sauvignon
Intense inky red colour, classic cassis with hints of blackberry. The palate is highly concentrated and elegant, structured tannins contribute to the length and balance of the wine.
