With its 572 square kilometers in size, the Pilanesberg National Park is the fourth largest national park in South Africa. The crater of a long extinct volcano stands in the centre of the Pilanesberg National Park. The crater is a fascinating alkaline complex which was created by volcanic eruptions some 1300 million years ago. The Pilanesberg in South Africa is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature.

Dining at the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge
Guests may enjoy a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner in the Kwa Maritane Restaurant overlooking the waterhole "The Rock" and the magnificent granite formations located within the Pilanesberg National Park. The lodge's buffet lunch and carvery dinner features a wide variety of different dishes based on delicious, traditionally South African fare, such as Springbok Carpaccio, Chicken and Coriander Salad and Seafood Hors D'oeuvres.
On Saturday and Wednesday evenings, if the weather allows, guests have the unique opportunity to dine al fresco typical South African dishes in the lodge's Bush Boma.
Children activities at the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge - Junior Rangers Programme
With many different activities to take part in such as game drives, bush walks, birding, picnicking and in-house entertainment, the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge offers the popular Junior Ranger’s programme, allowing parents to enrol their kids in a unique, educational and fun experience. Under the supervision of trained staff, parents can rest assured that their kids are well-looked after whilst participating in a host of educational activities allowing the whole family a great getaway.
Activities offered are geared around natural resource protection, environmental education and responsible recreation offering a special opportunity to explore the Pilanesberg National Park. Activities have been created for children from the ages of 6 to 12 years to encourage an appreciation for nature, conservation and natural resources. From learning about the history of the Pilanesberg National Park, participating in wildlife walks allowing children the opportunity to find out more about wild animals, the sounds various birds make become prominent as guides teach one what to listen for as well as that of the purpose of the various plant life around the lodges.
Directions to the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge
Directions from Sandton / Fourways:
- Travel north along William Nicol Drive to the four-way intersection with Witkoppen Road
- Turn left into Witkoppen Road towards Lanseria/Roodepoort
- Turn right at the intersection with Hans Strijdom (Malibongwe) extension on the road towards Broederstroom and Lanseria
- Cross over the Muldersdrift/Diepsloot Road and continue with the R512 towards Broederstroom and Lanseria
- Cross the bridge over the R28 Krugersdorp/Pretoria highway, pass the Lanseria turnoff and continue straight ahead
- At the T-junction turn left on the R512 to Magaliesberg
- Continue on this road until you see the Sun City signboard on your left.
- Turn right on the R512 to Brits and cross the bridge over Hartebeespoort Dam
- At the T-junction turn right on the R512 to Brits. Follow directional signs
- Continue to the four-way stop and turn left on the R512/27 for Brits/ Rustenburg
- Pass the first Brits turnoff. At the signpost R27 Rustenburg/Brits turn right
- On the bridge turn left towards Rustenburg
- Continue until you get to the slipway to the left. Take the slipway and continue on the new N4 highway (Platinum Highway)
- Continue on the N4 highway till you see the off ramp marked Pilanesberg to the left on route 91. Exit highway here and turn right at the T-Junction, continuing along this road towards Sun City (M556)
- When you have less than 5km's to go take the right turn towards Kwa Maritane / Mogwase / Pilanesberg Airport. Travel approx 2km's along this road to the Kwa Maritane Gate on your left.

Activities
The Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge in the Pilanesberg National Park offers game drives all year round, either in the early morning or late afternoon.
Game drive departure times from the Lodge (subject to change):

Besides the 'Big Five', visitors also have the opportunity to encounter the nocturnal brown hyena, cheetah, hippo, crocodile and even sable. The Pilanesberg National Park offers guests sightings of a wide diversity of animal and plant life including 360 species of birds, the Big Five and almost every type of animal found in Southern Africa.
The Pilanesberg National Park exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as "Bushveld". Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone.
Springbok, brown hyena, the red eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees usually home in arid areas are found cohabiting with moist-area-limited impala, black eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees. Wildlife includes lions, elephants, white and black rhinos, buffaloes, leopards, zebras, hyenas, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles.

The legendary bush braai is held in the boma situated 10 minutes from the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The menu served in the boma consists of traditional South African dishes.
The combination of game drives and bush braais can also be arranged on any other evening subject to a minimum of 30 people being booked.

The diversity in bird life of the malaria free Pilanesberg National Park is exceptional. Whilst some birds are migrants, many birds found in this region of South Africa are permanent inhabitants. Their food sources vary with some eating carrion or live prey, while others eat seeds, fruit or tiny water organisms.
The Pilanesberg National Park, North West province, is one of the best places for birding in South Africa. Over 350 species have been recorded in this national park and a birder could record up to 100 species in winter and plenty more in summer including both migrant and permanent species.
The transition zone between the dry Kalahari and the wetter lowveld region in this region of South Africa brings with it a unique mix of birds with Red-eyed Bulbus co-habiting with Black-eyed Bulbuls . Many other such fascinating habitations are visible throughout the Pilanesberg game reserve but it isn't limited to only bird species but also to other animals and plants.

Elephant Back Safari: An Age Old Concept - A New Adventure
Pick up from the Gametrackers Outdoor Adventures desk located at the Welcome Centre. Transfer to "The Elephant Wallow" will be approximately 20 minutes through the Letsatsing Game Reserve giving guests an opportunity to view game along the way.
On arrival, welcome drinks are served and guests are given an introductory talk and introduced to the elephants and their handlers. The elephants are then saddled and the safari commences.
After approximately an hour on elephant back guests return to "The Elephant Wallow" for light snacks. Guests are returned to the Welcome Centre, Sun City.
- Duration: approximately 2-3 hours
- Maximum 10 people – children under 5 years can unfortunately not participate
- Pick up and drop off is the Welcome Centre at the Sun City Resort

Hot Air Balloon Safaris in the Pilanesberg National Park
The Hot Air Balloon Safaris are offered every morning, depending on the weather and number of passengers. Guest are collected at their hotel or game lodge and are taken into the park to meet with the balloon crew.
The flight is approximately an hour in duration and on landing sparkling wine is served. A leisurely game drive is then taken through the park to a game lodge where breakfast is served, after which guest are returned to their hotel / game lodge.
- Duration: 1hr flight, +/- 4 hrs in total
- Booking is essential
- a minimum number of guests are required to conduct a flight
Flights are early in the morning and you will need to allow some 4 hours for the full activity which includes the following:
- Early morning collection from your hotel by safari vehicle
- Launch of the balloon from the centre of Pilanesberg National Park
- An hour drifting serenely over the Park
- A sparkling wine celebration on landing, a time-honoured tradition in ballooning
- A Full English breakfast at a Game Lodge
- A First Flight certificate signed by your Pilot
- Return transfer to your hotel / game lodge

No doubt I would come back here again, it was SUPER!!! During our 4 days at Kwa Maritane, we also went to visit the nearby Sun City Resort which was super. Game drives were also included during our stay, we LOVED the Safaris. Could not get enough - had a very knowledgable guide who taught us so much.

All aspects during our stay at the Kwa Maritane Lodge were excellent except that the staff allowed certain
unruly behaviour in the dining room to the extent that our own
enjoyment of dinner was compromised. The people behaving badly were a large group from Australasia. They
even brought their radio to the dining location and played loud
music,shouting and laughing at the top of their voices while other guests just had to suffer or make a complaint, which is not something that one wants to do.
