Town of Sabie
Sabie was founded in1871 when gold miners discovered gold here, although another element of earth – wood is the lifeblood of this forestry town, Sabie had one of the biggest gold rushes of the time. This little tourist town was declared an official town in 1915. Filled with history and museums, this is the best spot for breakfast on your Panorama drive.
Lone Creek Falls
The falls are situated approximately 9 km from sabie on the old Lydenburg road and have been declared a national monument. The falls are 68 m high and breathtaking views are conveniently situated. Picnic spots and public toilets are available.
Horse Shoe Falls
This interesting fall takes on the shape of a horseshoe. The walk up to the fall is beautiful and filled with our sub-tropical forest and wild flowers.
Bridal Veil Falls
The 750 m uphill trail leads to a breathtaking gracious flowing fall that, as the name says, resembles a bride’s veil. The Bridal Veil Falls plunge down a 70 m drop into the one of the many pools of the Sabie River.
Sabie Falls
This beautiful but often overlooked fall has a drop of more than 70 m. This fall, unlike the others is conveniently situated close to the road, which provides easy access.
Mac-Mac Falls
The well-known Mac-Mac falls are on the R532, 13 km from Sabie. The fall splits up into one big natural fall, and a smaller “manmade” fall. The fall is named after an old miner called Old Mac, who while looking for gold “created” the second fall with dynamite. A must see on your trip.
Maria Shires Falls
These falls were named after the daughter of the man who planted the 1st trees in 1876. Old graves of gold rush miners are to be found close to the falls, and the grave of Maria is at the crest of the falls.
Forest Falls
These magnificent falls can be reached by a 3 km nature trail through the natural forest, definitely not for the faint hearted. The forest falls is the only local falls, which is the lowest drop and has the widest spans.
Graskop
This small tourist town dates as far back as 1837. Perched on a spur of the Mauchsberg it reaches an altitude of 1493 m. Graskop was founded by Andries Potgieter when he passed through there with the “Great Trek” of the Voortrekkers, leaving the women on the “Grassy Peaks” while looking for an ox wagon route to Delagoa Bay, now Maputo in Mozambique. This town is also well known for the best pancakes in the Lowveld.
The Pinnacle
The towering 30 m granite rock towers up out of the indigenous vegetation and is one of the main viewpoints of the Panorama route.
God’s Window
1829 meters above sea level it is the most amazing view across the lowveld escarpment right to Mozambique. Different view points from different heights gives you different breathtaking views of this part of “heaven”, as the name describes.
Wonderview
An easy access lookout point over the escarpment, gives you a full view from the edge of the summit over the Lowveld. A definite stop if you are looking for an amazing view.
Lisbon Falls
This spectacular waterfall, is one of the highest falls in the area. At an amazing 82.5 m it will definitely take your breath away.
Berlin Falls
An 80 meter waterfall, plummeting out of the Blyde River into a deep pool which joins the Lisbon falls, down the river.
Bourke’s Luck Potholes
Marking one end of the Blyde River Canyon the views are spectacular. This is the confluence of the Treur and Blyde rivers. The potholes, some of which are up to 6 m deep, were formed over millions of years by sand, stone and tempestuous water. Named after a 19th century surveyor, Thomas Bourke, who found a great deal of gold at the bottom of these holes.
The Three Rondavels
Formed like traditional thatched huts, these three peaks are named after three of Chief Moripi’s wives. From lowest to highest they are, Magabolle, Mogoladikwe and Maseroto. These stunning peaks can be viewed from viewpoints situated along the gorge.
Pilgrim’s Rest
Alec “wheelbarrow” Patterson founded pilgrim’s rest in 1873 after he discovered gold there. Evidence of gold diggers can still be found around Pilgrims and the Pilgrim’s Rest Museum provides great amounts of history on the gold diggers.
Pilgrim’s Rest is now a living museum of the frenzy of the gold rush days. Visitors can experience the rush of panning for gold at the Digger’s Retreat. This old ghost mining town is a must stop for visitors.
Hoedspruit
Situated at the foot of the world-renowned Drakensberg escarpment and the 3rd largest canyon in the world, namely the Blyde River Canyon. This beautiful game farm world will welcome you with open arms. As you drive on the R40 through Hoedspruit, you will be welcomed by sights of game along the fences of hundreds of game rich farms.
Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre
Home to sick and orphaned wildlife, this centre provides a safe haven for all kinds of animals. Take a tour and get to touch or hold leopard cubs or see our very own Kruger Park Lodge hippo - Humphrey that was caught here a while back.
Kapama Cheetah Breeding Project
A very special breeding project for the endangered species of Cheetah, King Cheetah and the Cape Wild Dog. Take a drive with a qualified guide on the game farm down to the vulture’s restaurant or enjoy a meal at the Kapama Restaurant.
The Panorama Drive
Allow at least one day. Starting at Hazyview, take the R 536 to Sabie, where the lovely Horse Shoe, Lone creek, Bridal Veil and Sabie Falls can be enjoyed.
From Sabie continue on the R532 towards Graskop. Between Sabie and Graskop the Mac – Mac pools, Mac – Mac Falls, Maria Shires Falls and Forest Falls can be found.
From Graskop continue on the R533 to Pilgrim’s Rest, where the ghost of old gold diggers can still be found lurking around the old mine shafts.
From there back towards Graskop and turn back onto the R532 towards Blyde River Canyon. Turn Right on the R534, a 15 km panoramic loop with tumbling views of the escarpment and across the Lowveld to the Mozambique coast. On that loop viewpoints such as The Pinnacle, God’s Window and Wonderview can be enjoyed.
As the road rejoins the R532, majestic paths lead you to the two falls named, Lisbon and Berlin Falls. From there continue north on the R532 up towards The Bourke’s Luck Potholes and experience the power of soil erosion.
From there the last but not least – Three Rondavels with breathtaking views of the canyon and escarpment.
Turn back onto the R532 towards Graskop. From Graskop take the R536 towards Hazyview and unwind as the road leads you home. At Kruger Park Lodge kick back, relax and treasure the memories of the spectacular sights of the day.
