Restaurants

Dining at the Hunter's Country House

Since 1989, a dining experience at Hunter’s Country House has become one of the must do’s of the Garden Route in South Africa.

In a time when “less has become less and less”, and minimalism is at its zenith, there is something so welcoming about a Grand Old Homestead filled with decadent fabrics and the sparkle of crystal chandeliers. Arriving in time to enjoy the crepuscular light of the rolling gardens is imperative for an unforgettable dining experience at the five star Hunter's Country House.

The award winning fare on offer from the Head Chef and the team is sensitively and intelligently put together. With the luxury of a menu that changes weekly, the chef is able to make use of ingredients that are available and seasonally ripe for short periods during the year. Flavour combining is Tanya's hallmark and she and her Team have their fingers firmly on the pulse of International trends, whilst remaining true to their deep South African roots.

No dinner would be complete without the enjoyment of exceptional wines and Hunter’s Country House’s “strictly South Africa” highly rated wine list is a gem. So few properties have the ability to purchase wine for the future, with a 3000 bottle cellar, Hunter’s Country House does just that. The result is a treasure trove for wine lovers both local and international.

With the genteel and thoughtful service of local staff who have grown with the company over the years, a dinner visit to Hunters Country House just 10km outside Plettenberg Bay is like a holiday from the rushed world of today. Diners Club Platinum Award Winner 2006, 2007 and 2008 and the Achievement award for consistently remaining in the Top 10 restaurants of the Garden Route.

The Summer House at Hunter’s Country House

The Summer House at Hunter’s has become a well loved family favourite.  Initially created to provide guests with a reprieve from complicated menus, yes, it is actually very demanding dining one’s way through Cape Town, Franschhoek and the Garden Route.  The Executive Chef has created a no fuss, robust yet simple menu.

The menu focuses on the best of local produce from cheese to seafood, where one may taste different dishes and while away a lazy afternoon or evening in one of the most relaxing settings available.

Whether it is a quick bite on a sunny afternoon to the lazy buzz of bumble bees or a linger-longer dinner beneath the dainty sparkle of a chandeliered thatch roof, a meal at the Summer House is just special.

Spa

The Spa

Aromatherapy, massage, reflexology manicure and pedicure are available on request in the privacy of the guests' suite at the five star Hunter's Country House, Plettenberg Bay.

Aromatherapy Massage

Combines the use of gentle, rhythmic massage with the therapeutic effects of Essential Oils.  This is not a vigorous massage but rather a gentle treatment used for relaxation.  Please inform reception if you are pregnant or nursing as some oils are regarded as dangerous in these circumstances.

Holistic Massage

This treatment includes all those massage therapies (such as Swedish) that manipulate the soft tissues of the body.  Since emotional, mental and physical tension is stored in the muscle tissue, skilled massage applied to the soft tissue encourages the muscular and nervous systems to relax and release tension from the system.

Hot Stone Massage

This treatment uses warmed black volcanic stones to release and drain trapped tissue fluids thereby encouraging circulation throughout the body.  The pressure and gentle heat of the stones ease tight, contracted muscles introducing a deep sense of relaxation.

Reflexology

Is a method of stimulating the body’s healing mechanisms through the massage of certain reflex points on the feet.  Working through the various reflex points, the reflexologist is able to draw up an accurate map of where there are blockages in energy flow, which is closely correlated to health problems.  Massaging these reflex points, congested areas are unblocked and energy flow is restored enabling the process of healing to begin.  This is an excellent therapy for those people who prefer not to have full body massages, but would still like to derive the same benefits.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu utilizes a combination of pressure and assisted-stretching techniques, some of which are common to other therapies, such as Massage, Physiotherapy, Acupressure and Lymphatic Drainage. The treatment stimulates the circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluid, releases toxins and deep seated tensions from the muscles, stimulates the hormonal system and the immune system, and acts on the autonomic nervous system, allowing deep relaxation and the ability to get in touch with ones own healing power. No oils are used during the massage thus you remain clothed.

Indian Head & Shoulder Massage

Is a treatment involving work on the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp and face. A variety of massage movements are used to relieve accumulated tension, stimulate circulation and restore joint movement. Indian head massage is also used to aid the condition and health of the hair, particularly when combined with the use of natural organic oils. Indian head massage helps to reduce stress and fatigue, increase mental clarity, and relax and rejuvenate the receiver.

Bird watching

Knysna Tyraco / Loerie: These elusive birds were nearing extinction not so long ago, but numbers are successfully up and Hunter's landscaped gardens are home to dozens of pairs...

Where one Loerie flies, another always follows a minute or two later. They have the most extraordinary crimson wings, only visible in flight and their forest green to midnight blue plumage makes them hard to spot in dense foliage until they start their barking call.  The staff at the Hunter's Country House is happy to help guests find them in the morning or the late afternoon. Specialist local birder tours of the estate's gardens at sunrise are a truly memorable experience for early risers.

Chorister Robin-chat is usually on hand in and around the accommodation. Also common in the estate are Lemon (Cinnamon) and Red-eyed Dove, Olive Thrush, Terrestrial Brownbul (Bulbul) and Dusky Flycatchers. In the forested areas, also look out for Knysna Turaco, Emerald Cuckoo, Knysna and Olive Woodpecker, Narina Trogon, Sharp-billed Honeyguide, Grey Cuckooshrike, Knysna Warbler, Yellow-throated Woodland Warbler, White-starred Robin, Blue-mantled Crested Flycatcher and Cape Batis, although some of these species are elusive.

The Tsitsikamma Forest also hosts African Crowned Eagle and African Wood Owl, plus some of the accipiters such as African Goshawk and Black Sparrowhawk.

In the mountains one should look for Cape Canary , Cape Sugarbird , Orange-breasted Sunbird, Black Saw-wing and Ground Woodpecker. Also present, though difficult to locate are Protea Canary, Victorin’s Warbler, Striped Flufftail and Cape Siskin .
